Dragonflight Unholy Death Knight DPS Guide

Unholy Death Knight Overview

The 2-hand, plate-wearing dps specialization known as "Unholy Death Knight" concentrates on diseases, pets, and shadow damage. We conjure armies of undead minions, afflict our adversaries with a variety of diseases, and unleash shadow damage on groups of foes. We often have high burst rates in both Single Target and AoE.

As we are a hero class, new Unholy Death Knights begin at level 8 as opposed to level 1. Apart for the Dracthyr, all races can play Unholy Death Knights. For players who enjoy strong burst, numerous cooldowns, and rewarding AoE gaming, the Unholy Death Knight spec is for them.

Unholy DK Stats

Strength is your primary stat, and is found on plate gear. Strength increases your attack power and damage done with abilities.

For secondary stats, Unholy DKs have the following:

  • Strength >> Haste > Mastery >= Crit = Vers
  • Critical Strike: Chance for your damaging abilities to deal 200% damage.
  • Haste: Increases attack speed, reduces the global cooldown, and increases your Rune regeneration.
  • Mastery: Increases the shadow damage you deal as well as the damage from your minions, through  Mastery: Dreadblade.
  • Versatility: This is an all-around stat. Increases damage dealt, healing received, and reduces damage taken

Best Unholy Death Knight Phials

Overall the best phial for Unholy Death Knights is  Phial of Elemental Chaos or  Phial of Tepid Versatility. The choice depends on your current stats so make sure to sim your character to find the answer that's best for you!  Iced Phial of Corrupting Rage is a potential alternative but with a significant drawback. Whenever you take heavy damage, the actual usefulness of this phial diminishes, making it much worse. It's possibly better for easier content like reclears and fast kills.

Best Unholy Death Knight Combat Potions

There are a couple different potions that have different useful scenarios for Unholy Death Knight:

Unholy Death Knight Weapon Buff in Dragonflight

For their weapons, Unholy Death Knights will generally use  Howling Rune.

Best Unholy Death Knight Gems in Dragonflight

For your gems, you want to equip one epic gem:  Fierce Illimited Diamond and then just fill in the rest of the slots with  Keen Ysemerald!

Pros and Cons

 Strengths Weaknesses
  • AoE ability - We have very strong AoE burst windows.
  • Execute Burn - We have one of the strongest execute burns in the game, especially when paired with  Bloodlust.
  • Initial Burst - We can put out a very respectable amount of burst damage on single target in the first 30-40 seconds on an encounter.
  • Great Survivability - We have a ton of active and passive defensives that help us survive.
  • Target-Switching - Due to long set-up and ramp-up times for our single target damage, we have trouble changing targets on the fly.
  • Low Mobility - Along with Paladins, DKs are now one of the slowest melee classes in the game in general.
  • Low Mythic+ Utility - We lack many of the tools that make other classes wanted in Mythic+ environments.

Unholy Death Knight Rotation Priority

Maintaining your  Virulent Plague.  your first concern during your core rotation. Using  Outbreak and  Unholy Blight (if talented). You can cast  Outbreak, whenever the  Virulent Plague duration is 30% or less left (due to the pandemic DoT effect). Second, make sure you're not overloading on Runic Power. When you generate more runic power than you can use, this is known as overcapping. When you are within 20 Runic Power from the cap, you should never press  Festering Strike In order to prevent this overcapping, we cast  Death Coil. Not overcapping Runic Power is more significant in Dragonflight than overcapping Runes. The next most important thing is to manage your stacks of  Festering Wound. You want to stay between 3 and 6 at all times. At 2 stacks, use   Festering Strike or at 3 and above, use  Scourge Strike We maintain a high count to make it easier for us to set up for our  Apocalypse  but we don't generate unless we're at 2 or less to prevent overcapping with  Infected Claws. You can aim for 0-3  Festering Wounds if you haven't chosen this talent. The last thing you do is spend your Runic Power on  Death Coil as your last priority.

Raid Build Opener

  1.  Army of the Dead as you run towards the boss
  2.  Unholy Assault+ Racial + Trinket

A note on the Racial usage. It's ideal to make them overlap with the end of the  Summon Gargoyle cooldown.  Berserking should be used when there's 12 seconds left,  Blood Fury when there's 15 seconds left etc.

Raid Build Rotation Priority

  1.  Soul Reaper if your target is below 35% health.
  2. Use  Unholy Blight/  Outbreak to keep 100% uptime on  Virulent Plague.
  3. Use  Death Coil if you are about to cap Runic Power (80+)
  4. Use  Festering Strike if you have 2 or fewer  Festering Wounds
  5. Use  Scourge Strike if you have 3 or more  Festering Wounds

Unholy Death Knight Disease Mythic+ Rotation

The Disease build is by far the most popular and versatile build for the Unholy Death Knights. There are multiple similar builds that have different varities of Single Target vs AoE damage, but all share the core concept of the Disease gameplay. I would say that there are three primary aspects to the disease rotation:

With that out of the way, let's discuss what your opener should look like on any given pull. I like to think about it as being governed by your  Plaguebringer window of 10 seconds. This is how it should look like:

  1.  Scourge Strike to start your  Plaguebringer window
  2.  Unholy Blight or  Outbreak to apply your Diseases.
  3. Dump  Epidemic until  Plaguebringer needs refreshing (1 second left).
  4. Dump  Epidemic.
  5.  Scourge Strike to generate a ton more RP.
  6. Dump  Epidemic.

After this point, you can use a second  Death and Decay to keep cleaving. If you don't have it, simply use  Festering Strike to build wounds,  Scourge Strike to burst them and  Epidemic to do the actual damage.
