Dragonflight Blood Death Knight Tanking Guide

Dragonflight Blood Death Knight Tanking Guide | Simple Carry

Blood Death Knight Overview

Our playstyle as Blood Death Knights, one of the game's six tank specializations, is reactive and optimization-driven. It entails generating as much Runic Power as you can through spells and abilities, and healing damage taken with  Death Strike. In addition to self-sustain cooldowns like  Vampiric Blood and  Dancing Rune Weapon, immunities to specific mechanics with  Anti-Magic Shell, a combat resurrection for allies, and even a pet ghoul acting as a source of DPS thanks to  Raise Dead, our toolkit's breadth provides a number of solutions for various circumstances!

Best Stats for Blood Death Knights

Strength is your primary stat, found on plate gear. Strength increases your armor and attack power, in addition to providing a neat amount of Parry. It is the most prevalent stat on most gear pieces, and is part of the primary budget.

For secondary stats, Blood Death Knights have the following at their disposal:

  • Strength>>Mastery>=Critical Strike>=Haste>=Versatility
  • Critical Strike: Critical Strike is very strong offensively, in addition to being a near-1:1 conversion to parry. Its relative strength to the rest of the stats will depend on factors including the number of enemies hitting you, how much of their abilities can be parried, and the average amount of damage each parry-able hit does. Overall, while it is not a great stat, it is not worth avoiding either, and picks up value in M+.
  • Haste: Haste provides a 1.1% increase in rune generation per percent of haste thanks to  Bone Shield, and improves your reaction time - the value of your self-healing is strongly dependent on the timing of your  Death Strike.
  • Mastery:  Mastery: Blood Shield provides a tremendous amount of value against physical damage and scales in absolute value with the amount of damage you are taking.... as long as you do not die from the hit! The addition of  Iron Heart and  Gloom Ward has pushed this stat to an even higher value than in Shadowlands.
  • Versatility: Versatility provides both a reduction in damage taken and an increase in self-healing, in addition to providing a small damage increase. It is the most globally-applicable stat, but also the most expensive in terms of item budget.

Best Blood Death Knight Gems in Dragonflight

You'll want to use  Quick Ysemerald or  Keen Ysemerald in your gem slots, with the exception of one, where you should slot in a  Fierce Illimited Diamond.

Pros and Cons

 Strengths Weaknesses
  • Limited mobility:  Death's Advance baseline, with a potential talent choice in  Wraith Walk to gain a second charge
  • We are tuned around taking higher amounts of damage upfront and healing it back. This leaves us open to being bursted down without being able to, well, heal it up. You can't heal when you're dead.
  • In Dragonflight, the design of the spec severely punishes mistakes, but the punishment has no immediate feedback.

Blood Death Knight Rotation Priority

Blood Death Knight Opener

This opener aims to maximize the following:

Blood Death Knight Single Target Rotation and Priority

Outside of  Dancing Rune Weapon

  1. Do not let  Bone Shield drop! Use  Marrowrend to keep stacks up.
  2. Cast  Death and Decay as long as you are not currently in your own  Death and Decay
  3. Maintain yourself at 5+  Bone Shield charges. It is okay to let yourself drop slightly below in the 10 seconds prior to  Dancing Rune Weapon coming back off cooldown.
  4. Use  Dancing Rune Weapon on cooldown
  5. Use  Tombstone if the following conditions are true:
    1. You will gain more than 20 seconds of cooldown reduction from  Tombstone on  Dancing Rune Weapon
    2. You will consume 5  Bone Shield
    3. You are currently standing in your  Death and Decay
  6. Spend Runic Power on  Death Strike. Use it when you reach 75 Runic Power, or to keep  Icy Talons from fading.
  7. Cast  Blood Boil to keep its charges rolling
  8. Use  Heart Strike as a filler to consume Runes. You should aim to have three recharging at all times

During  Dancing Rune Weapon

  1. Cast  Marrowrend in one of the last three GCDs of  Dancing Rune Weapon. This primes the next 30 seconds of your rotation by bringing you back to 10  Bone Shield charges.
  2. Cast  Death and Decay as long as you are not currently in your own  Death and Decay
  3. Maintain yourself at 1+  Bone Shield charge.
  4. Use  Tombstone if the following conditions are true:
    1. You will gain more than 20 seconds of cooldown reduction from  Tombstone on  Dancing Rune Weapon
    2. You will consume 5  Bone Shield
    3. You are currently standing in your  Death and Decay
  5. Spend Runic Power on  Death Strike. Use it when you reach 75 Runic Power, or to keep  Icy Talons from fading.
  6. Cast  Blood Boil to keep its charges rolling
