Shadow Priest DPS Guide - Dragonflight 10.2.7

Shadow Priest DPS Guide - Dragonflight 10.2.7 | Simple Carry

Shadow Priest stands as a ranged cloth DPS specialization renowned for its amalgamation of direct damage and damage over time spells, primarily rooted in the manipulation of Shadow energy. Central to its strategy is the utilization of self-healing mechanisms for defense. Notably, the Shadow Priest lacks inherent mobility, necessitating meticulous planning for movement during encounters. However, adept utilization of available kiting tools becomes crucial. Furthermore, the Shadow Priest possesses the capability to enhance both personal and allied damage output. This specialization excels in unleashing formidable bursts of damage within minute intervals, leveraging a repertoire of stacked cooldowns for maximum impact.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Shadow Priest Specialization

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Shadow Priests excel at single and priority target damage. They also have access to spread cleave through multi dotting.
  • Short cooldown defensives and strong self healing make Shadow highly durable in endgame content.
  • Shadow's multi dotting is weaker than it has been in previous expansions, making spread cleave less of an important niche.
  • Shadow's damage outside of cooldowns, and especially whilst cleaving, requires you to stand still to be most effective.
  • Shadow lacks powerful mobility choices and the ability to kite.
  • Heavy reliance on specific talent builds that are tailored to specific content.

Shadow Priest Rework in Patch 10.2

In Patch 10.2, a subtle adjustment was made to the Surge of Insanity talent for Shadow Priests, halving the number of empowered filler casts it previously offered. While this modification does not significantly alter the day-to-day gameplay experience for Shadow Priests, it does translate to reduced Insanity generation and an increase in the number of unempowered filler spell casts.

Harness the newfound power of your Shadow Priest weapons by equipping them with the formidable Vault of the Incarnates gear. Maximize your damage output and effectiveness by swiftly acquiring a Tier Set through the expertise of our professional players.

How to play Shadow Priest

The core of Shadow Priest is built around building and spending Insanity Insanity. Generate by applying  Vampiric Touch and casting filler spells like  Mind Flay and  Mind Blast, then spend it on powerful  Devouring Plagues.

And to supplement your talent build and conquer raids and dungeons, use our PvE Gear service.

Shadow Priest Rotation

Until you have access to the Season 4 tier set bonus, you will still be using the season 3 set and therefore use Season 3 Talents. This opener assumes you started with at least 10 Insanity Insanity from casting  Halo or  Divine Star before pull. Depending on how much haste you have and how much Insanity Insanity insanity you generate the position of your first cast of  Devouring Plague will vary. Cast  Devouring Plague as soon as possible once you are inside  Dark Ascension. This opener also assumes that though you have all of  Deathspeaker Mind Devourer and  Shadowy Insight talented, you do not get any procs.

Note: The opener lists two on use trinkets from the raid and their potential use timings. If you are wearing both trinkets then use Nymue's Unraveling Spindle Nymue's Unraveling Spindle as instructed and Belor'relos, the Suncaller Belor'relos, the Suncaller when it comes off cooldown 30 seconds into the fight.

  1. Pre-Cast  Vampiric Touch
  2. Use Nymue's Unraveling Spindle Nymue's Unraveling Spindle if equipped.
  3. Use Belor'relos, the Suncaller Belor'relos, the Suncaller if equipped with the  Mindbender cast.
  4. Use  Power Infusion and any stat-based racial abilities such as  Berserking
  5. Cast  Mind Blast twice.

Shadow Priest Rotation and Priority

  1. Make sure your target has both  Shadow Word: Pain and  Vampiric Touch active.
  2. Cast  Shadow Word: Death on cooldown
  3. Cast  Void Eruption on cooldown. Make sure  Mind Blast charges are on cooldown before this.
  4. Cast  Dark Ascension on cooldown.
  5. Use offensive trinkets and potions.
  6. Cast  Mind Blast if  Mindbender is active and you are capped on charges or will cap charges soon. Cast at high priority if  Mindbender will expire otherwise.
  7. Spend Insanity on  Devouring Plague. Spread this DoT around to all available targets.
  8. Spend Insanity on  Devouring Plague. Maintain maximum uptime on the DoT without capping on Insanity. You can cast regardless during  Voidform if it will let you cast another  Void Bolt before  Voidform expires.
  9. Spend Insanity on  Devouring Plague. Maintain maximum uptime on the DoT without capping on Insanity.
  10. Cast  Shadow Crash unless additional targets are spawning in 15 seconds or less.
  11. Cast  Shadow Word: Death if the target is below 20% HP,  Deathspeaker is active, or  Mindbender is active.
  12. Cast  Shadow Word: Death if the target is below 20% HP, or  Mindbender is active.
  13. Cast  Mind Blast if capped on charges.
  14. Fully deplete all  Mind Blast charges unless  Mind Devourer is active.
  15. Cast  Mind Spike: Insanity if available.
  16. Cast  Mind Flay: Insanity if available.
  17. Cast  Halo.
  18. While  Voidform is active dump Insanity with  Devouring Plague.
  19. Cast whatever instants you have left to move.

Shadow Priest Multi Target Rotation and Priority

Shadow Priest no longer has a strict multi-target rotation thanks to the removal of Mind Sear. Instead you will follow your Single Target rotation priorities with additional focus on keeping as many  Vampiric Touches up on enemy targets as possible.

Shadow Priest Cooldowns in Dragonflight

The Shadow Priest boasts an extensive array of cooldowns, each characterized by distinct durations and timers. Optimal utilization of these cooldowns entails strategic timing, particularly when possessing a comprehensive comprehension of the encounter dynamics. In such scenarios, adeptly synchronizing or withholding specific cooldowns to align with others upon their reactivation becomes paramount. However, this strategic maneuver should only be pursued if it ensures the maximization of each cooldown's utility throughout the entirety of the encounter.

For those who may lack the requisite understanding to intricately time their cooldowns in accordance with encounter nuances, adhering to the following guidelines remains a viable approach.

  •  Voidform (Entered via  Void Eruption): Should be used on cooldown if you're able to take advantage of the full duration and you won't need it for a critical section of the fight that will happen soon.
  •  Dark Ascension: Should be used on cooldown.
  •  Mindgames: Should be used on cooldown.
  •  Halo: Should be thought of primarily as a healing and utility spell, as the damage on Single Target is not that much. It's a strong tool for burst AoE though.
  •  Void Torrent:  Void Torrent deals a massive amount of damage and generates 24 insanity over its 3 second duration. You should use this on cooldown, but aim to have all 3 of your dots active on the target to get the most value out of your mastery and  Insidious Ire if talented.
  •  Shadowfiend /  Mindbender: Summons a pet to attack your target for 15 seconds with a 3m or 1m cooldown. Best used on cooldown.

Shadow Priest Best Gear

Navigating the realm of gearing in Dragonflight presents a multifaceted challenge, compounded by the scarcity of loot and diverse sources of equipment. While the pursuit of absolute Best in Slot (BiS) gear may seem enticing, it's often a lofty goal given the myriad of factors at play. In light of this, we've meticulously curated a Best in Slot list, drawing from the optimal drops for Shadow Priests in Dragonflight, sourced from Mythic+ Dungeons and Awakened Raids. This list serves as a valuable resource to aid in prioritizing your gear acquisitions.

While raid drops traditionally stand as reliable avenues for securing high item level gear, it's imperative to recognize that alternative items from various sources can rival, if not surpass, their efficacy. Consultation of the stat priorities outlined on the stats page can prove instrumental in discerning your personal BiS gear configuration based on the options available to you. Archon emerges as a valuable ally in this endeavor, offering insights into alternative gear possibilities should obtaining the absolute BiS prove challenging.

As a general guideline, prioritize stats in the following order: Haste > Mastery >= Critical Strike > Versatility. However, don't overlook the significance of Intellect; a substantial increase in item level often outweighs the benefits of meticulously optimized stats. It is advisable to leverage Raidbots to simulate your character, as individual nuances can significantly impact gear effectiveness. Tailoring your gear selection to suit your unique character profile ensures optimal performance on the battlefield.

In an emergency, make sure to carry a couple Potion of Withering Dreams Potion of Withering Dreams , but be mindful of its drawbacks. For progression, it is very useful to have Delicate Suspension of Spores Delicate Suspension of Spores  and Residual Neural Channeling Agent Residual Neural Channeling Agent  to be able to help your group even while dead.

Shadow Priest Phials in Dragonflight

Overall the best phial for Shadow Priests is Iced Phial of Corrupting Rage Iced Phial of Corrupting Rage , though Phial of Tepid Versatility Phial of Tepid Versatility  can still be useful if the damage taken from the DoT is causing problems for you or your group.

Shadow Priest Weapon Buff in Dragonflight

For their weapons, Shadow Priests will always use Howling Rune Howling Rune .

Gems

You'll want to use Fierce Illimited Diamond Fierce Illimited Diamond  as your diamond gem, and Keen Ysemerald Keen Ysemerald  in all other sockets.

The Best Shadow Priest Trinkets

In the realm of Dragonflight, Shadow Priests seek out trinkets that synergize seamlessly with their playstyle, enhancing their potency on the battlefield. When considering the best trinkets for a Shadow Priest, a strategic approach is paramount.

First and foremost, Shadow Priests prioritize acquiring a potent on-use trinket that complements their cooldown rotations. Such trinkets provide a burst of power precisely when needed, amplifying the impact of their abilities during crucial moments. Pairing these on-use effects with Shadow Priest cooldowns maximizes their damage potential and utility.

Additionally, Shadow Priests benefit from supplementary trinkets that either proc or offer flat stat bonuses. These trinkets contribute to their overall stat optimization, bolstering key attributes essential for maximizing performance. Mastery and critical strike reign supreme among the desired stats for Shadow Priests, as they directly enhance their damage output and effectiveness in combat.

By strategically selecting trinkets that align with their playstyle and stat priorities, Shadow Priests can elevate their performance in Dragonflight encounters, emerging as formidable forces to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Grade Trinket Drop Location Notes
S Neltharion's Call to Suffering Neltharion's Call to Suffering Echo of Neltharion Shadow's strongest passive damage trinket due to the ludicrous amount of total stats it offers, as well as additional item level.
S Ominous Chromatic Essence Ominous Chromatic Essence Amalgamation Chamber Shadow's other strongest passive trinket. This one only reaches its full potential with multiple other users and you should aim to use either the Emerald or Obsidian buffs.
S Tome of Unstable Power Tome of Unstable Power The Azure Vault This is Shadow's best Mythic+ option currently as the proc scales with targets. Be wary though as they may not performa as well in practice as it appears.
A Belor'relos, the Suncaller Belor'relos, the Suncaller Tindral Sageswift Shadow's best on use option, however it is weaker than it was in season 3. This is a strong raw damage trinket but has the downsides of requiring melee range and dealing a hefty amount of damage back to the user.
A Umbrelskul's Fractured Heart Umbrelskul's Fractured Heart The Azure Vault This is an interesting passive trinket which shines on fights where adds are present. This is easily your best option on any fights with frequently spawning adds.
A Nymue's Unraveling Spindle Nymue's Unraveling Spindle Nymue Another strong Single Target on use option. This trinket is at its best on immobile bosses such as Gnarlroot, Nymue, Volcoross, and Teros.
A Whispering Incarnate Icon Whispering Incarnate Icon Primal Council Another powerful passive trinket. Once you have a healer or tank using it, it becomes one of Shadow's best options. If you have both a healer and tank using it then it easily competes with Shadow's best options.
B+ Pip's Emerald Friendship Badge Pip's Emerald Friendship Badge Council of Dreams The weakest of the passive stat raid trinkets.
B Vessel of Searing Shadow Vessel of Searing Shadow Amalgamation Chamber An acceptable passive trinket, it is just weaker than other raid options.
B Furious Ragefeather Furious Ragefeather The Nokhud Offensive Feather is a fine passive damage trinket accessible from dungeons as opposed to raids.
B Spoils of Neltharus Spoils of Neltharus Neltharus An old favourite from season 2, unfortunately it is not as strong as raid on use trinkets.
C Irideus Fragment Irideus Fragment Halls of Infusion One of the weaker on use dungeon trinkets, 3 minute cooldowns do not line up well with Shadow's cooldowns.
C Ashes of the Embersoul Ashes of the Embersoul Smolderon Shadow has better on use trinket choices at this point with all the haste being provided by stats on gear. If you are somehow incredibly low on haste this might be an option for you.
D Igneous Flowstone Igneous Flowstone Magmorax This trinket is an acceptable stopgap if it is a massive ilvl upgrade but otherwise not useful.
D Desperate Invoker's Codex Desperate Invoker's Codex Raszageth This trinket is an acceptable stopgap if it is a massive ilvl upgrade and the fight is very long but otherwise not useful.
F Beacon to the Beyond Beacon to the Beyond Sarkareth This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Screaming Black Dragonscale Screaming Black Dragonscale Kazzara, the Hellforged This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Spiteful Storm Spiteful Storm Raszageth This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Iceblood Deathsnare Iceblood Deathsnare Sennarth This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Time-Breaching Talon Time-Breaching Talon Uldaman This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Erupting Spear Fragment Erupting Spear Fragment Neltharus This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Ruby Whelp Shell Ruby Whelp Shell Ruby Life Pools This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Idol of Pure Decay Idol of Pure Decay Brackenhide Hollow This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.
F Augury of the Primal Flame Augury of the Primal Flame Fyrakk This trinket is not good for Shadow and should be avoided unless you have no other options.

Best Gear to Spend Bullions for Shadow Priests in Season 4

Best Items to Upgrade with Dream Crests for Shadow Priests

Bullion items are by far the highest priority items to be upgrading with Dreaming Crests. I would highly recommend upgrading those first. Secondly it's crafted items with Blue Silken Blue Silken Lining Blue Silken Lining  . BSL scales with Item Level, so having BSL at a high ilvl is a huge deal. After that is any Myth track tier pieces or items you plan to catalyze into tier.

Crafted Gear for Shadow Priests in Dragonflight

Dragonflight adds many new options for crafted gear, allowing players to craft even Mythic-equivalent gear! You'll generally want to supplement gear from Raids and Mythic+ with crafted pieces. Note that crafting is limited by Spark of Awakening Spark of Awakening. After receiving your first Spark of Awakening Spark of Awakening from the first week of Dragonflight Season 4, you will receive another Spark of Awakening Spark of Awakening every other week while Dragonflight Season 4 is active.

Best Gear to Spend Spark of Awakening for Shadow Priests

Once you obtain Spark of Awakening Spark of Awakening, you should aim to craft the following items at the highest item level possible. Note that you may use the recrafting system to increase its item level later if you so desire. After crafting your best pieces, you can use sparks to improve slots that you have the lowest item level pieces, aiming to increase your average item level.

    1. Vibrant Wildercloth Shawl Vibrant Wildercloth Shawl is a good craft specifically if you don't feel comfortable using the Sarkareth cloak. If this is the case use a higher item level pair of boots instead.

Hood of Surging Time Hood of Surging Time is also an option for Mythic+ and mass AoE specifically, though it requiring alternative tier pieces and having niche use makes it unlikely to be something you'll make early on.

    Best Embellishments for Shadow Priests

Crafting items with Embellishments gives them special properties and effects in addition to regular stats. However, you may only wear 2 pieces of gear with Embellishments at a time. With that in mind, the best Embellishments are:

    1. Allied Wristguards of Time Dilation Allied Wristguards of Time Dilation Shadow's strongest embellished item in terms of value to the group, the versatility provided is on average stronger than any of Shadow's other options and the advantage of being on a low value slot does come up with crafted items being 3 ilvls lower than maximum for the Mythic track this tier.
    2. Blue Silken Lining Blue Silken Lining  Though inconsistent, this embellishment beats all options besides the aforementioned Wrists even with as little as 40% uptime. The fact it can be attached to any slot of crafted gear is also helpful as you will want high stat value items like chests and helms to be the max item level of 489.
    3. Hood of Surging Time Hood of Surging Time For Mythic+ specifically this can be more valuable than Allied Wristguards of Time Dilation Allied Wristguards of Time Dilation due to its value in mass AoE situations. It does however require you to use alternate tier pieces you may not have access to early on. Maintaining your set bonus is more important than having access to any specific embellishment.
    4. Alchemical Flavor Pocket Alchemical Flavor Pocket This embellishment does not count towards your usual embellishment cap of 2 and is therefor effectively free if you are willing to sacrifice 3 potential item level compared to a 4/4 myth track item in the same slot. For some this will be enough of a quality of life improvement though I still recommend you craft an item with this last.

    Shadow Priest Leveling

While Shadow specialization continues to reign supreme as the swiftest leveling path for Priests in Dragonflight, it also poses unique challenges, particularly for newer players. Its inherent squishiness and complex AoE rotation demand a steep learning curve, making it less forgiving compared to other options.

Many players opt for one of the two healing specializations for the added safety they afford, along with their simpler rotations. This choice provides a buffer against the perils of the leveling journey, allowing for a more gradual acclimatization to the intricacies of Priest gameplay.

Moreover, the Priest class as a whole faces limitations in executing constant large pulls, unlike some other classes. Consequently, leveling as a healer presents a less pronounced downgrade in efficiency, as the focus shifts from maximizing damage output to sustaining survivability and supporting allies.

Ultimately, while Shadow remains the quickest path to level for Priests in Dragonflight, aspiring adventurers must carefully weigh the trade-offs between speed and comfort, selecting the specialization that aligns best with their preferences and skill level.

    • Use  Fade alongside  Mindbender and other pets to divert attention away from yourself if you're in danger.
    • Pair  Vampiric Embrace with other large cooldowns to maximise healing output.
    •  Void Tendrils can be shielded and healed in a pinch to increase their longevity.
    • If you are using  Dominate Mind to take control of mobs whilst levelling, make sure it won't expire during a large or dangerous pull.
