Dragonflight Discipline Priest Healing Guide

Discipline Priest Overview

A skilled raid-wide burst healer with superior absorbs and damage-reduction capabilities is the Discipline Priest in Dragonflight. In  Atonement, they mark teammates with beneficial buffs to assist them defend against impending damage. This enables the Discipline Priest to deliver significant damage to the boss while healing the marked allies.

Since they "ramp up" their  Atonement counts to increase their healing and then rest in between these ramps, Discipline's healing has a natural ebb and flow that offers little healing in between their significant bursts.

Discipline Priest Stats

For secondary stats, the Discipline Priest has the following:

  • Intellect > Haste > Mastery = Critical Strike > Versatility
  • Critical Strike: Provides a chance to double the damage and healing done by your spells. Overall very solid stat.
  • Haste: Haste reduces the cooldown of certain spells like Solace, which can greatly improve our efficiency, and also other damage and healing spells, which results in greater throughput. More rapid casts allow for more Atonements to be placed out for specific windows of damage.
  • Mastery:  Mastery: Grace increases all healing and absorbs on targets with Atonement. Once you have a suitable amount of Haste, you will look towards high ilvl gear with both Mastery and Critical Strike on them. If you are more focused on Mythic+/5mans, you may look for stats that will increase your damage instead of Mastery.
  • Versatility: Provides a linear gain in outgoing healing and damage, as well as reduction of damage taken. Versatility does NOT double dip with  Atonement healing. Only the healing portion affects it.

Discipline Priest Phials

Overall the best phial for Discipline Priests is  Phial of Tepid Versatility, unfortunately  Phial of Static Empowerment requires you to stand still and one wrong movement from a mechanic can remove the high intellect buff and reduce the value of your ramp in an instant.  Phial of Elemental Chaos is a good universal alternative and in challenging Mythic+  Phial of Tepid Versatility is excellent.

Discipline Priest Combat Potions

There are a couple different potions that have different useful scenarios for Discipline Priests:

Discipline Priest Weapon Buff

For their weapons, Discipline Priests will use  Howling Rune in Raiding and Mythic+.

Best Discipline Priest Gems

You'll want to use  Fierce Illimited Diamond and  Crafty Ysemerald in your gem slots.

Discipline Priest Rotation and Priority

Standard  Rapture and  Evangelism Ramps. Updated for 10.0.5

This is your standard  Rapture/ Evangelism ramp setup as most encounters you'll use both abilities together on 1.5min cooldown, utilizing  Light's Wrath. You'll be playing heavily around  Twilight Equilibrium for the initial casts of your burst damage, and then playing off of  Harsh Discipline for your follow-up high damage  Penances.

  1. Refresh  Purge the Wicked and make sure  Harsh Discipline is active before you begin applying  Atonement.
  2. Cast  Rapture.
  3. Apply 8-10  Atonements via  Power Word: Shield until  Rapture duration ends. Apply your last  Atonement with  Flash Heal as this will apply  Atonement to you and your target thanks to the  Binding Heals talent.
  4. Cast  Power Word: Radiance,  Shadowfiend, then the other  Power Word: Radiance charge. Always good to cast one on melee and one on ranged.
  5. Extend active  Atonements with  Evangelism.
  6. Cast  Schism.
  7. Cast  Halo.
  8. Cast  Penance.
  9. Cast  Purge the Wicked*. (While casting  Mind Blast queue up the  Purge the Wicked cast to immediately spell queue value from  Expiation.

Mini Ramps and Downtime

Thanks to the  Bright Pupil you now have greater access to  Power Word: Radiance charges in between your traditional  Rapture/ Evangelism ramps that are outlined above. In general, you will primarily use  Power Word: Shield to apply  Atonements to your tanks during downtime, but when damage in between your ramps goes out, this will be where you use  Power Word: Radiance to apply  Atonements to the group to produce moderate healing.
  1. Use  Smite/ Power Word: Solace to activate  Harsh Discipline and have  Purge the Wicked up in advance.
  2. If you have excess mana you can use  Power Word: Shield and  Renew to apply  Atonement, use both  Power Word: Radiance charges as needed.
  3. Cast  Schism.
  4. Cast  Halo.
  5. Cast  Penance.
  6. Cast  Purge the Wicked*. (While casting  Mind Blast queue up the  Purge the Wicked cast to immediately spell queue value from  Expiation.

M+ Gameplay

In dungeons, you will leverage  Shadow Covenant to empower your damaging abilities, you will also be using the  Embrace Shadow talent for a longer duration. With this, your goal is to aggressively use  Mind Blast now that the spell costs significantly less with Patch 10.0.5 as this will grant significant cooldown reduction to your  Mindbender and extend its duration. While you won't "ramp" necessarily, you will use  Power Word: Radiance frequently to apply party-wide  Atonements and to spot heal the party from bursty damage,  Power Word: Shield the tank constantly, and keep enemies debuffed with  Purge the Wicked as often as possible.

When you need to produce heavy party healing, follow the priority list below to maximize your output but be mindful of your mana and focus on reducing the cooldown and using frequent  Mindbenders. Keep in mind that even if you do not have  Purge the Wicked on the target, you can cast  Mind Blast and spell queue (aka mash the  Purge the Wicked button mid  Mind Blast cast, and you will generate  Expiation healing from the hit of  Mind Blast.
  1. Maintain  Purge the Wicked on as many enemies as possible that will survive most/if not all of the duration.
  2. Cast  Penance to deal damage and spread  Purge the Wicked
  3. When producing large party healing, prepare with the following.
  4. Cast  Schism.
  5. Cast  Penance.
  6. Cast  Shadow Word: Death if in execute, otherwise  Mind Blast.
  7. Keep  Mind Blast on cooldown.
  8. Cast  Smite.
