Strengths and Weaknesses of the Holy Paladin

Strengths:

  1. Passive Tank Healing: Holy Paladins excel at providing excellent passive healing to tanks through the use of Beacon of Light. This ability allows you to maintain a steady stream of healing on your designated target, ensuring their survival in the midst of intense encounters.

  2. Versatile Utility Spells: Holy Paladins possess a wide range of utility spells that can be cast on themselves or others. Blessing of Protection offers a powerful damage mitigation tool, while Blessing of Freedom grants freedom from movement-impairing effects. These spells provide valuable support and can be crucial in challenging situations.

  3. High Survivability: Wearing plate armor grants Holy Paladins a higher level of durability compared to other healers. In addition, defensive spells like Divine Protection and Divine Shield further enhance your survivability, allowing you to withstand heavy damage and keep healing even in dire circumstances.

  4. Significant Damage Output: Holy Paladins stand out among healers due to their ability to deal considerable damage while simultaneously healing. Core abilities like Crusader Strike and Judgment provide a unique combination of healing and damage in a single cast, making Holy Paladins a formidable force on the battlefield.

  5. Raid Cooldown: In raiding content, Holy Paladins shine with their potent raid cooldown, Aura Mastery. This ability enhances the effectiveness of your healing spells and can turn the tide of battle, making you an invaluable asset to your raid group.

Weaknesses:

  1. Limited AoE Healing: Holy Paladins may struggle when it comes to quickly healing multiple spread targets. Their reliance on Light of Dawn for area-of-effect (AoE) healing means that healing spread-out groups efficiently can be a challenge. Coordinating healing with other AoE healers becomes crucial in these situations.

  2. Mobility Constraints: Compared to some other healing specializations, Holy Paladins are generally not as mobile. While Divine Steed provides a movement speed increase, it is their only tool for mobility. This lack of mobility can make it more challenging to quickly reposition and respond to dynamic encounters.

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the Holy Paladin is essential for optimizing your healing potential. By leveraging your strengths and finding strategies to mitigate your weaknesses, you can become a formidable healer, capable of delivering exceptional support to your allies in the heat of battle.

Basics of Holy Paladin Gameplay

Holy Paladin, like any healer, is all about using your abilities strategically. Rather than a fixed rotation, you will be using your flexible spell kit to adapt and overcome whatever the game throws at you.

In order to be a successful Holy Paladin, it is vital you make use of your cooldown abilities as efficiently as possible. This means using Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock, Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn, and Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike as many times as possible over the course of a fight. When you cannot use any of those abilities, you can then cast Holy Light Icon Holy Light or Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light as long as you still have Mana left to use them.

Cooldown Usage for Holy Paladins

As a Holy Paladin, you have several healing cooldowns. You should use them as we explain below:

  • Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath should be used as often as possible throughout the fight, but you should also consider saving it for periods of high sustained damage. Make sure that you have a target to attack and can safely be in melee range of a target for the entire duration of Avenging Wrath.
  • Lay on Hands Icon Lay on Hands should be used to save dying raid members, especially tanks.
  • Holy Avenger Icon Holy Avenger increases your Holy Power generation. You will want to use this as often as possible as long as there is healing to be done. In most cases, you will not want to use Holy Avenger with any other cooldowns. It can occasionally be paired with Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath if extreme healing is needed. However, you will want to avoid combining them if possible.
  • Blessing of Sacrifice Icon Blessing of Sacrifice is excellent for reducing the damage taken by the tank or other raid members. Be cautious, however, because the Blessing of Sacrifice can be dangerous to your own life if used without a damage reduction cooldown, such as Divine Protection Icon Divine Protection or Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield, or when simultaneous raid damage independently threatens your life, such that the additional damage taken from Blessing of Sacrifice can lead to your death.
  • Aura Mastery Icon Aura Mastery should be used at a time designated by your healing officer or raid leader.
  • Blessing of Protection Icon Blessing of Protection can be used to clear harmful physical damage debuffs and bleeds from the target. Be mindful of the fact that bosses will not attack targets affected by Blessing of Protection, though, so only cast it on the current tank if the off-tank is prepared to take over.
  • Blessing of Freedom Icon Blessing of Freedom removes movement-impairing effects from the targeted raid member, which can be very useful in certain situations.

Understanding the Basics of Stats for Holy Paladins

Determining the optimal stat priority for a Holy Paladin involves considering various factors such as spell selection, fight duration, proximity to healing targets, and talent choices. While there is a general stat priority, it is important to note that the value of secondary stats is closely balanced, and the potency of Intellect at current gear levels often outweighs specific secondary stat optimizations. However, understanding how each stat can affect your healing performance is essential in making informed gear choices. Let's delve into the primary stats for a Holy Paladin:

  1. Intellect: Intellect is the most crucial stat for a Holy Paladin. It directly increases your spell power, improving the effectiveness of your healing abilities. Due to the significant scaling of Intellect, higher item-level gear upgrades typically take priority, regardless of specific secondary stat allocations.

  2. Critical Strike: Critical Strike increases your chance to critically strike with your healing spells, resulting in increased healing throughput. It also provides mana return through the Infusion of Light talent. While Critical Strike is valuable for burst healing and mana conservation, its significance can vary depending on spell selection and playstyle.

  3. Haste: Haste reduces the global cooldown, decreases the cast time of spells, and increases the frequency of your abilities. It directly affects your healing speed and increases the number of heals you can perform within a given timeframe. Haste can be particularly beneficial for Holy Paladins with a preference for a faster-paced, proactive healing style.

  4. Versatility: Versatility enhances both your damage output and healing throughput while reducing incoming damage. It provides a well-rounded benefit by increasing your overall effectiveness in both offensive and defensive aspects. Versatility is a solid secondary stat choice for Holy Paladins, offering a balanced boost to various aspects of gameplay.

  5. Mastery: Mastery, specifically Mastery: Lightbringer, increases the potency of your heals on targets affected by your Beacon of Light. It enhances your ability to effectively heal your primary target while simultaneously healing secondary targets through Beacon transfers. Mastery becomes increasingly valuable when prioritizing tank healing or encounters that require substantial single-target focus.

As you evaluate gear choices, it is essential to consider the specific requirements of each encounter, your healing playstyle, and the balance between secondary stats. While item level generally takes precedence, optimizing secondary stat allocations can further refine your healing capabilities. Experimenting with different stat distributions and adapting to encounter demands will help you find the ideal balance for your Holy Paladin's performance.

The Value of Haste for Holy Paladins

Haste is generally considered a valuable stat for Holy Paladins. It offers several benefits, such as reducing the global cooldown, decreasing cast times, and increasing the frequency of your abilities. This increased speed directly impacts your healing output and enables you to respond more swiftly to damage taken by your allies. However, the value of Haste can vary depending on your mana usage, spell selection, and encounter duration.

Mana Management: One aspect to consider when evaluating the value of Haste is mana management. Holy Paladins rely on their mana pool to sustain their healing throughout encounters. If you find yourself running out of mana before the fight concludes, it may indicate that you are casting too many expensive spells or not utilizing mana-conserving techniques effectively. In such cases, adjusting your spell selection and prioritizing more mana-efficient options can help alleviate mana strain.

Encounter Duration: The value of Haste can fluctuate significantly based on encounter duration. Shorter fights often benefit more from Haste, as the increased frequency of your heals allows for more immediate response to damage spikes. On the other hand, longer encounters require more sustainable mana management. In these scenarios, balancing your Haste with other stats becomes crucial to ensure you can maintain a steady healing output without exhausting your mana reserves.

Finding the Optimal Balance: Striking the right balance with Haste involves considering your healing playstyle, encounter demands, and mana sustainability. It is recommended to experiment with different Haste levels and observe how it affects your healing performance and mana consumption. Adjustments can be made by reforging or selecting gear with different stat distributions. Keep in mind that the importance of Haste may vary depending on your preferred spell selection and whether you prioritize proactive healing or reactive healing.

Flexibility in Stat Allocation: The value of Haste for Holy Paladins lies in its flexibility. It can be a powerful asset in situations that demand rapid healing response, especially for encounters with frequent damage spikes. However, if mana management becomes a concern, reducing Haste to maintain a sustainable healing output may be necessary. Balancing Haste with other secondary stats, such as Critical Strike and Versatility, can help fine-tune your overall performance.

Ultimately, the effectiveness of Haste is situational and may require adjustments based on encounter dynamics, spell usage, and personal preferences. Continuously evaluating your healing approach, monitoring mana consumption, and adapting your stat allocations accordingly will enable you to optimize your Holy Paladin's healing capabilities in diverse scenarios.

Understanding the Role of Mastery for Holy Paladins

Mastery: Lightbringer is a unique stat for Holy Paladins that directly affects their healing capabilities. The value of Mastery is dependent on your positioning relative to your healing targets and the specific encounter dynamics. Here's a closer look at the role of Mastery for Holy Paladins:

Proximity to Healing Targets: Mastery shines when you are in situations where the entire group is in close proximity to you. In these scenarios, Mastery becomes more valuable as it enhances the effectiveness of your heals on targets affected by your Beacon of Light. With Mastery, your primary healing target receives amplified healing, while secondary targets benefit from Beacon transfers. This makes Mastery a potent stat for maintaining focused healing on specific targets.

Group Spread and Distance: However, as the group becomes more spread out and your healing targets move beyond the 30-yard range, the value of Mastery diminishes. In situations where your healing targets are spread out and positioned far away from you, other stats, such as Critical Strike and Haste, may become more beneficial in terms of overall healing throughput and response time.

Balance with Other Stats: It's important to note that while Mastery can excel in certain scenarios, it does not contribute to your damage output. If you find yourself in situations where dealing damage is a priority or when healing targets are spread out, other secondary stats may provide more well-rounded benefits. Critical Strike, for instance, enhances your chance to critically strike with healing spells, boosting your healing throughput and potential mana return through talents like Infusion of Light.

Optimizing for Encounter Requirements: To optimize your healing potential for specific encounters, you may consider having separate gear sets with varying levels of Mastery. This allows you to adapt to different positioning requirements and talent choices. By switching between a Mastery-heavy gear set and a low-Mastery gear set based on group positioning demands, you can fine-tune your healing capabilities to better suit the encounter dynamics.

Overall, Mastery provides significant value when Holy Paladins can effectively utilize Beacon of Light and maintain close proximity to their healing targets. However, it is important to strike a balance between Mastery and other secondary stats to optimize your healing output in different scenarios. By assessing encounter requirements, considering talent choices, and adjusting gear accordingly, you can tailor your stat allocations to enhance your Holy Paladin's healing prowess and adaptability.

Talent Choices and Stats

In previous patches, Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader was not increased by Mastery. In Patch 10.1, this was changed so that the ability is correctly increased with Mastery. For this reason, you Mastery no longer loses value with Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader builds.

With Awakening Icon Awakening selected, the value of Critical Strike is reduced slightly, and the value of Haste increases. This is because Haste reduces the cooldown of some of your Holy Power-generating abilities. The faster you are able to generate Holy Power, the more Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn and Word of Glory Icon Word of Glory casts you will have. This means higher potential uptime on the Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath effect, which has a 30% Critical Strike bonus when active.

Crusader's Might Icon Crusader's Might will increase the value of Haste.

Raiding Stat Priority for Holy Paladins

When it comes to raiding as a Holy Paladin, the following stat priority is generally recommended:

  1. Intellect: Intellect remains the top priority for Holy Paladins in raiding. It directly increases your spell power, amplifying the effectiveness of your healing abilities. As the primary stat, Intellect should be prioritized in gear choices, as higher item level upgrades usually provide a significant boost to your overall healing output.

  2. Haste: Haste is typically the second most important secondary stat for raiding Holy Paladins. It reduces the global cooldown, decreases cast times, and increases the frequency of your abilities. The faster casting speed and increased spell frequency enable you to respond swiftly to incoming damage, optimizing your healing throughput. Haste allows for a more proactive playstyle, ensuring you can efficiently heal your allies during intense raid encounters.

  3. Mastery: Mastery is the third priority for Holy Paladins in raid settings. Mastery: Lightbringer enhances the potency of your heals on targets affected by Beacon of Light. It strengthens your single-target healing capabilities, making it particularly valuable when focusing on tank healing or encounters that require sustained attention to specific individuals. While not as universally beneficial as Intellect and Haste, Mastery can significantly enhance your effectiveness when used strategically.

  4. Versatility: Versatility is the fourth priority stat for raiding Holy Paladins. It provides a well-rounded boost to your damage output, healing throughput, and damage reduction. Versatility increases the overall effectiveness of your healing and survivability, making it a solid choice for improving your performance in raid encounters. While not as specialized as Haste or Mastery, Versatility offers versatility (pun intended) in various aspects of gameplay.

  5. Critical Strike: Critical Strike is generally considered the lowest priority secondary stat for raiding Holy Paladins. While it increases your chance to critically strike with healing spells, enhancing healing throughput and potentially providing mana return through talents like Infusion of Light, it is not as consistently beneficial as the other stats mentioned above. Critical Strike can still provide occasional bursts of powerful healing, but its overall impact is generally less significant compared to Intellect, Haste, Mastery, and Versatility.

It is important to note that while this stat priority serves as a general guideline, the specific demands of encounters and individual playstyle may warrant adjustments. Personal preferences, encounter mechanics, and gear optimization can influence the relative value of secondary stats for your Holy Paladin. Experimentation, evaluation, and adapting to the needs of each encounter will help you fine-tune your stat allocations and maximize your healing potential in raiding content.

Mythic+ Stat Priority for Holy Paladins

When participating in Mythic+ dungeons as a Holy Paladin, the stat priority undergoes a slight shift to optimize your performance in this fast-paced, challenging environment. The revised stat priority for Mythic+ is as follows:

  1. Intellect: Intellect remains the primary stat and retains its highest priority in Mythic+ dungeons. It directly increases your spell power, amplifying the effectiveness of your healing abilities. Higher item level upgrades with increased Intellect will generally have a significant impact on your overall healing output.

  2. Haste: Haste retains its position as the second most important secondary stat in Mythic+ scenarios. The increased casting speed and reduced cooldowns of abilities such as Holy Shock and Crusader Strike significantly enhance your healing potential. Haste becomes especially valuable in Mythic+ dungeons due to the increased frequency of damage spikes and the need for rapid healing response. The faster cooldowns also synergize with the Glimmer of Light playstyle, making Haste a key factor in maximizing your healing throughput.

  3. Versatility: Versatility maintains its importance in Mythic+ dungeons, though it is slightly elevated in priority compared to Critical Strike. Versatility enhances your damage output and provides a minor increase in damage reduction, which can contribute to your survivability. The balanced benefits of Versatility make it a solid choice for Mythic+ dungeons, where you need both effective healing and some degree of resilience.

  4. Critical Strike: Critical Strike is slightly reduced in priority for Mythic+ dungeons compared to raiding. Holy Shock already has a baseline +30% increased Critical Strike chance, making the additional Critical Strike from gear less impactful. However, Critical Strike can still provide occasional bursts of potent healing, so it retains its value to some extent.

  5. Mastery: Mastery takes a lower priority in Mythic+ dungeons compared to raiding. While Mastery: Lightbringer can enhance your single-target healing potential, the nature of Mythic+ dungeons, with their focus on group-wide damage and spread-out targets, reduces the effectiveness of Mastery. It is still a viable stat, but its impact is generally less pronounced in Mythic+ environments.

Min-Maxing and Theorycrafting: If you are interested in min-maxing your stats and optimizing your Holy Paladin for Mythic+ dungeons, resources such as the QuestionablyEpic website dedicated to healer theorycrafting can provide valuable insights. These resources analyze gear, logs, and other factors to offer recommendations on stat optimization, gear choices, and maximizing healing throughput.

By carefully considering your stat priorities, adapting to the unique demands of Mythic+ dungeons, and leveraging resources for theorycrafting, you can fine-tune your Holy Paladin's stats and gear selections to achieve optimal performance in Mythic+ dungeons.

A Word About Leech

Although tertiary stats such as Speed, Leech, or Avoidance only appear as a bonus on gear at random, the Leech stat is so valuable for healers that it deserves to be mentioned. Any Leech on your gear is free healing that allows you to focus on other people rather than healing yourself. Its value will vary a bit based on how much damage you are taking in an encounter, but it is typically at least as valuable as your other secondary stats and often more valuable. You should keep this in mind when comparing lower item level gear with Leech to higher item level replacements without it.

Any time you are using the Maraad's Dying Breath Icon Maraad's Dying Breath legendary, the value of leech will increase even more as you are taking an increased amount of damage compared to normal Holy Paladin gameplay.

Statistics Explanations for Holy Paladins:

  1. Intellect: Intellect is the primary stat for Holy Paladins. It directly increases your Spell Power, which enhances the effectiveness of your healing spells. Higher Intellect values result in stronger heals, allowing you to restore health more efficiently.

  2. Critical Strike: Critical Strike increases your chance to critically hit with all spells and abilities. When you land a critical strike, the heal or damage you deal is increased. Critical Strike can provide occasional bursts of powerful healing, making it valuable for Holy Paladins who prioritize burst healing or mana return through talents like Infusion of Light.

  3. Haste: Haste lowers your global cooldown and reduces the cast time of your spells. It also increases the frequency of your abilities, allowing you to cast more heals within a given timeframe. Haste is particularly beneficial for Holy Paladins who prefer a faster-paced, proactive healing playstyle. The faster casting speed and reduced cooldowns enable swift responses to incoming damage.

  4. Mastery (Mastery: Lightbringer): Mastery: Lightbringer is the Holy Paladin's Mastery specialization. It causes the healing you do to be increased based on the proximity of your healing targets to you. The closer they are to you, the more potent your heals become. Mastery is particularly valuable in situations where your healing targets remain in close proximity, such as tank healing or encounters that require focused attention on specific individuals.

  5. Versatility: Versatility enhances both your damage and healing output while reducing the damage you take. It provides a well-rounded increase in overall effectiveness. Increased damage and healing contribute to improved performance in various aspects of gameplay, while damage reduction boosts your survivability. Versatility offers a balanced benefit, making it a solid choice for Holy Paladins seeking a versatile and well-rounded stat allocation.

Understanding the role of each stat helps you make informed gear choices and optimize your Holy Paladin's performance. Keep in mind that the stat priority can vary based on encounter demands, playstyle preferences, and specific talent selections. Balancing your stats to align with your desired healing approach and adapting to the unique requirements of each encounter will enable you to maximize your effectiveness as a Holy Paladin.

Best Gems for Holy Paladins

In Dragonflight, there are many new gems added that can help you balance your stats. Primalist gems exist, which are limited to having only one in your gear. You will always want at least one of these and prefer Fierce Illimited Diamond Icon Fierce Illimited Diamond. Outside of that, Keen Ysemerald Icon Keen Ysemerald will be your go-to gem choice. Single stat gems such as Quick Ysemerald Icon Quick Ysemerald will not be as valuable due to the fact that it provides fewer overall stats than a gem with two stats.

Introduction to DPS as a Holy Paladin

As a Holy Paladin, your primary role is to keep your group alive through your healing abilities. However, healers also have the opportunity to contribute damage when the situation allows for it. While it's important to focus on mastering the Holy Paladin healing rotation before prioritizing damage, understanding how to effectively contribute DPS can be beneficial in various forms of content.

Building Confidence in Healing: Before delving into DPS as a Holy Paladin, it's crucial to gain a strong understanding of your healing rotation and feel confident in your ability to fulfill your primary role. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the core healing spells, cooldown management, and efficient mana usage. It is recommended to prioritize healing until you have a solid grasp of the intricacies of Holy Paladin healing.

Damage for Efficiency and Progression: In all forms of content, dealing more damage can have significant advantages. Killing enemies faster reduces the overall healing required and decreases the chance of mistakes occurring. The shorter an enemy's lifespan, the less time you have to contend with potentially dangerous mechanics. Even in raiding, where healers have limited opportunities to contribute significant damage, your additional damage can make a difference between close wipes and successful boss kills.

Balancing Healing and Damage: When engaging in DPS as a healer, it is essential to prioritize healing over damage. Your primary responsibility is to keep your group alive, and no one should ever die because you were focusing on dealing damage instead of healing them. Ensure that your healing duties are not neglected or compromised while contributing DPS. Timing your damage output during periods of lower incoming damage or when your healing rotation is stable can help strike a balance between both roles.

Gradual Progression and Comfort: Streamers and top-tier players may approach DPSing differently because they have mastered the specialization and are more comfortable with managing multiple responsibilities. As a Holy Paladin, it is recommended to focus on healing proficiency before shifting attention to maximizing DPS. Gradually integrating DPS into your gameplay as you gain confidence in your healing abilities will allow you to strike the right balance without compromising the well-being of your group.

Remember, as a Holy Paladin, your primary duty is to keep your allies alive. While contributing damage can be advantageous, it should never come at the expense of someone's survival. By maintaining a mindful approach to healing and DPS, you can effectively support your group's success in various content while upholding the core responsibility of a healer—ensuring the safety and well-being of your teammates.

Relevant Spells and Passives Summary

  • Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock can be used offensively to damage an enemy. While it is one of our harder hitting abilities, it is also one of our stronger healing abilities. Because of this, you may want to avoid using Holy Shock on enemies in periods of danger. If everyone is safe however, you can use it on an enemy for the DPS increase.
  • Consecration Icon Consecration is your primary way of dealing damage in AoE situations. You will want to try to keep this down as much as possible when facing multiple enemies.
  • Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous is your other form of dealing AoE damage. It consumes 3 Holy Power to damage enemies in front of you. It unfortunately is fairly weak and in most cases you will be better off using your Holy Power on healing spells unless no one absolutely needs healing.
  • Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike is a core ability for both Healing and DPSing, as this ability generates 1 Holy Power, you will use it regardless of whether you are focusing on healing or DPSing in the moment.
  • Judgment Icon Judgment will buff your next Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock or Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike by 30%. You will want to use this ability off cooldown when DPSing.
  • Hammer of Wrath Icon Hammer of Wrath is one of our strongest DPS abilities. Just like Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike, it is a core ability for Healing as well as DPSing. You will want to use this off cooldown as much as possible.

DPS Rotation

DPSing as Holy Paladin is extremely simple since most of our abilities for DPSing also contribute towards our healing. Thus, they are fundamental parts of the Holy Paladin rotation to begin with.

  1. Keep Consecration Icon Consecration on the ground. This is especially important in AoE situations.
  2. Cast Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous if you have the Holy Power available to do so.
  3. Cast Hammer of Wrath Icon Hammer of Wrath off cooldown.
  4. Cast Judgment Icon Judgment off cooldown.
  5. Cast Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock off cooldown.
  6. Use Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike if you have a charge and it will not clip the cooldown of Holy Shock.

If you are playing Awakening Icon Awakening, you will want to avoid using Shield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous on single target as you will gain more damage from spamming Word of Glory Icon Word of Glory and Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn to increase the chance of proccing Awakening for increased Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath uptime and thus more access to Hammer of Wrath Icon Hammer of Wrath.

Mastering the Art of Interweaving Heals and Damage

One of the hallmarks of a skilled player is the ability to seamlessly weave damage spells into your healing rotation. While it is important to prioritize healing and ensure the well-being of your group, finding opportunities to contribute damage can greatly enhance your overall effectiveness. Balancing both roles requires strategic decision-making and a deep understanding of your abilities as a Holy Paladin. Let's explore some key considerations for successfully interweaving heals and damage.

Maintaining Healing Priority: In most cases, your healing rotation should take precedence over DPS. Your primary goal as a Holy Paladin is to keep your group alive and ensure their well-being. Thus, you should avoid compromising your healing rotation for the sake of dealing damage. Only cast damage spells when there are no immediate healing needs or when the group is not taking significant damage.

Utilizing Damage Spells: When weaving in damage spells, it is important to optimize their usage. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

  1. Consecration and Judgment: Keep Consecration on the ground and use Judgment on cooldown. These damage-dealing abilities can be cast alongside your healing rotation without significantly impacting your healing output.

  2. Shield of the Righteous: While Shield of the Righteous can deal damage, it does relatively little healing for its cost. As a result, it is generally more beneficial to prioritize using Holy Power on healing spells rather than Shield of the Righteous.

  3. Holy Shock: Holy Shock can be utilized on both allies and enemies. However, when your primary focus is healing, it is generally better to use Holy Shock on allies in need of immediate healing. Save it for DPS purposes only when there is no immediate healing need.

Strategic Decision-Making: It is essential to make conscious decisions about when to prioritize healing and when to focus on dealing damage. Assess the current state of your group and the urgency of healing needs. If no one requires immediate healing and the group is stable, you can shift your attention towards contributing damage. However, if healing demands arise, promptly shift your focus back to your primary healing duties.

Emphasizing Healing in High-Pressure Situations: During intense encounters or high-pressure moments where survival is paramount, it is crucial to prioritize healing over damage. Ensuring the well-being of your group should always be your top priority. Only when the situation allows for it should you consider contributing damage to expedite enemy kills and mitigate the overall healing required.

By mastering the art of interweaving heals and damage, you can elevate your gameplay as a Holy Paladin. Striking the right balance between healing and DPS requires keen situational awareness, effective mana management, and the ability to adapt to ever-changing encounter dynamics. With practice and experience, you will become a versatile healer capable of seamlessly integrating both roles to optimize your group's success.

Optimizing Light of the Martyr Usage

Light of the Martyr can be a powerful tool for Holy Paladins, providing a quick burst of healing. However, it's important to use this ability judiciously and understand its limitations to maximize its effectiveness. Here are some considerations for optimizing Light of the Martyr usage:

Recognizing the Self-Damage: Newer Holy Paladins often make the mistake of casting Light of the Martyr too frequently without fully considering the self-damage it inflicts. Standard healing meter addons commonly used by players may not accurately account for the damage taken by the Paladin when casting this spell. However, combat logs provide a more comprehensive view, subtracting the self-damage from the Paladin's overall healing done.

Assessing Net Healing and Beacon Transfer: By reviewing combat logs and accounting for self-damage, the weaknesses of Light of the Martyr become evident. Its net healing, or the actual healing output after factoring in self-damage, is relatively low. Furthermore, Light of the Martyr does not transfer healing to your Beacon of Light target, limiting its effectiveness in maintaining sustained healing on designated targets.

Strategic Light of the Martyr Usage: To optimize Light of the Martyr usage, it is recommended to employ it sparingly. The following guidelines can help determine when to use this ability:

  1. Less Frequent Usage: In a typical raid encounter, aim to use Light of the Martyr less than once per minute. This conservative approach helps prevent excessive self-damage and ensures a more balanced healing output.

  2. Prioritize Essential Situations: Reserve Light of the Martyr for specific scenarios where its immediate healing potential is crucial. For example, when movement is required or when someone's life is in immediate danger, Light of the Martyr can be a lifesaver. Prioritizing these critical situations helps maximize the impact of the ability.

  3. Beacon of Light Considerations: Keep in mind that Light of the Martyr does not transfer healing to your Beacon of Light target. If maintaining consistent healing on your Beacon target is essential, consider utilizing other healing spells that can contribute to both direct healing and Beacon transfers.

  4. Balancing Healing Efficiency: Strive for a balance between healing efficiency and self-damage mitigation. While Light of the Martyr can provide swift healing, it should be used judiciously to avoid excessive self-damage that may hinder your overall performance.

Ultimately, optimizing Light of the Martyr usage involves striking a balance between its immediate healing benefits and the potential drawbacks of self-damage and limited Beacon transfer. By using this ability strategically, sparingly, and primarily in critical situations, you can enhance your healing effectiveness while mitigating potential risks. Remember, healing efficiency and the well-being of your group should always take precedence over self-inflicted damage.

Optimizing Short Cooldown Spells for Holy Paladins

As a Holy Paladin, you have access to several powerful spells with short cooldowns that play a vital role in your healing arsenal. These spells, typically with cooldowns shorter than 30 seconds, are designed to be potent and cost-effective. Utilizing them efficiently is crucial for optimizing your healing performance. Let's explore the importance of using these short cooldown spells effectively.

Maximizing Holy Shock: Holy Shock is undoubtedly the most vital short cooldown spell for Holy Paladins. It is a potent and cost-effective spell with a cooldown of 9 seconds. Holy Shock also boasts a 30% increased chance to critically strike, making it even more impactful. Furthermore, critical strikes from Holy Shock grant you the Infusion of Light buff, which empowers your next Holy Light or Flash of Light.

The significance of Holy Shock cannot be overstated. Failing to cast Holy Shock as often as possible means relying more on weaker, slower, or more mana-intensive spells such as Holy Light or Flash of Light. This can lead to suboptimal healing, quick mana depletion, or both. By prioritizing Holy Shock and casting it whenever available, you maximize your healing output, maintain efficient mana usage, and capitalize on the benefits of critical strikes and Infusion of Light.

Awareness of Cooldown Management: In addition to Holy Shock, other short cooldown spells can enhance your healing potential. These may include talent-specific spells that provide unique benefits or utility in specific situations. It is essential to be aware of these spells and manage their cooldowns effectively.

Developing a keen sense of when to use these spells, whether for burst healing, damage mitigation, or utility, allows you to respond to various encounter demands swiftly. By using these spells proactively and strategically, you can optimize your healing capabilities and contribute to the overall success of your group.

Balancing Cooldown Usage: While it is crucial to use short cooldown spells as often as possible, it is equally important to strike a balance and avoid wasteful or unnecessary casting. Mindful cooldown management ensures you have these powerful spells available when they are truly needed, especially during high-pressure moments or when encountering intense damage spikes.

By refining your cooldown management skills and prioritizing the optimal usage of short cooldown spells, you can enhance your healing efficiency, mitigate mana concerns, and maximize your overall effectiveness as a Holy Paladin.

Remember, the short cooldown spells at your disposal are designed to provide you with significant healing potential. By making Holy Shock a priority and effectively managing other short cooldown spells, you will experience improved healing output, efficient resource management, and ultimately, a greater impact on the well-being of your group.

Optimizing the Use of Longer Cooldowns for Holy Paladins

In addition to effectively utilizing short cooldown spells, it is equally important to maximize the usage of your larger healing cooldowns as a Holy Paladin. Spells like Avenging Wrath can significantly enhance your healing capabilities and contribute to the overall success of your group. Here are some considerations for optimizing the use of longer cooldowns:

Avoiding Excessive "Saving": One common mistake healers make is holding onto their larger healing cooldowns, waiting for the "perfect" moment that may never come. It is essential to avoid excessive "saving" of your cooldowns and instead focus on using them whenever there is healing to be done. Waiting for an ideal scenario may result in missed opportunities to benefit from the power and effectiveness of your cooldowns.

Maximizing Cooldown Utilization: To optimize the use of longer cooldowns, it is crucial to employ them as often as possible, as long as there is healing to be done. These cooldowns, such as Avenging Wrath, provide significant boosts to your healing output and can help address intense moments of damage or critical healing needs.

Identifying Opportunities: While it is important to use your larger healing cooldowns regularly, there may be specific encounters or events where saving them for a particular moment makes strategic sense. If you anticipate a situation where your cooldowns will be crucial sooner than their natural cooldown periods, it is acceptable to plan their usage accordingly. However, it is essential to identify these opportunities before or during the encounter to prevent extended periods of cooldowns going unused.

Communication and Coordination: Effective communication with your group, particularly the raid leader or healing coordinator, can provide valuable insights into when and where to best utilize your larger healing cooldowns. By collaborating and coordinating cooldown usage, you can ensure that these powerful abilities are optimally deployed to address critical healing requirements and enhance the group's overall performance.

Striking the Balance: Finding the right balance between utilizing your larger healing cooldowns and saving them for key moments requires a keen understanding of encounter dynamics, healing demands, and cooldown availability. It is crucial to assess the healing needs of your group and gauge the urgency of healing requirements. Regularly evaluate the situation to determine when it is appropriate to activate these impactful abilities.

By optimizing the usage of your larger healing cooldowns and avoiding excessive "saving," you can make the most of these powerful tools in your healing arsenal. Balancing their utilization with the immediate healing needs of your group ensures efficient cooldown management and enhances your ability to respond effectively to various encounter challenges. Remember to communicate and coordinate with your team to maximize the impact of your cooldowns and contribute to a successful healing outcome.

Balancing Healing Priorities: Beacon of Light and Other Targets

As a Holy Paladin, understanding the role of Beacon of Light in your healing strategy is crucial to optimizing your overall healing output. While Holy Paladins are known for their tank healing prowess, it is essential to strike a balance between healing your Beacon target(s) and directing your attention to other members of your group. Let's delve into the importance of managing your healing priorities effectively.

Beacon of Light and Extra Healing Transfer: Beacon of Light is a cornerstone ability for Holy Paladins, providing an additional layer of healing by transferring a portion of your healing to the Beacon target(s). However, it's important to note that the extra healing transfer does not occur if you directly heal your Beacon target(s). This means that if you want to maximize your healing efficiency, it is generally advisable to avoid direct healing on your Beacon target(s) unless they are in significant danger or require immediate attention.

Leveraging Other Healers: Allowing other healers to focus on healing your Beacon target(s) enables them to apply their own healing specialties and abilities to address any specific needs or challenges the tanks may face. By relying on the support of your fellow healers for direct healing on the Beacon target(s), you can concentrate your efforts on healing other members of the group who may require your attention.

Balancing Healing and Efficiency: Striking the right balance between healing others and attending to your Beacon target(s) is a hallmark of an experienced and skilled Holy Paladin. Effective Beacon management involves monitoring the health and well-being of your Beacon target(s) while being mindful not to overcommit direct healing to them, allowing your Beacon to support the tank's own self-healing and mitigation abilities.

Situational Awareness and Communication: Developing situational awareness is crucial for determining when it is appropriate to provide direct healing to your Beacon target(s) and when it is more efficient to focus on other members of the group. Pay attention to encounter dynamics, incoming damage patterns, and the overall healing needs of the group to make informed decisions. Effective communication with your healing team can also help coordinate efforts and ensure that all targets receive the necessary attention and support.

An Experienced and Skilled Holy Paladin: Successfully managing the balance between healing priorities showcases your expertise as a Holy Paladin. Knowing when to prioritize healing others and when to rely on your Beacon's healing transfer is a testament to your ability to adapt and make optimal decisions based on the needs of the group. Continually honing this skill demonstrates your dedication to mastering the intricacies of Holy Paladin healing.

By understanding the role of Beacon of Light and effectively managing your healing priorities, you can maximize your healing efficiency, optimize your overall output, and contribute to the success and well-being of your group.

Enhancing Performance through Effective Positioning

Positioning plays a vital role in optimizing the performance of Holy Paladins. There are three key reasons why positioning is crucial for their healing and damage output: the Mastery: Lightbringer effect, the AoE healing spell Light of Dawn, and the importance of Crusader Strike for damage. By understanding the significance of positioning, Holy Paladins can maximize their healing and damage potential. Let's explore the reasons in further detail.

  1. Mastery: Lightbringer and Distance: Holy Paladins benefit from the Mastery: Lightbringer, which increases their healing based on the distance between themselves and the target being healed. Being positioned closer to the person being healed enhances the effectiveness of their Mastery. By staying in close proximity to a large portion of the group or raid, Holy Paladins can optimize their healing output and provide more potent heals.

  2. Light of Dawn and Cone Healing: Light of Dawn is the main AoE healing spell for Holy Paladins, healing players in a cone in front of the Paladin. Positioning oneself among the melee DPS players ensures that the cone of Light of Dawn covers as many injured targets as possible. By standing within reach of the melee group, Holy Paladins can efficiently deliver effective AoE healing and contribute to group survival.

  3. Crusader Strike and Avenging Crusader: Holy Paladins rely on Crusader Strike as a significant source of their damage. With the introduction of Avenging Crusader as a talent, positioning becomes even more crucial. By positioning alongside the melee DPS players, Holy Paladins can remain in range to deal damage to the boss during phases with lower healing requirements. This allows for efficient damage contribution while still maintaining proximity to their healing targets.

Exceptions to Melee Positioning: While positioning among melee DPS players is generally beneficial, there are instances where Holy Paladins may need to adjust their positioning. This can include situations where specific boss abilities target the Paladin, the need to be within range to heal specific ranged DPS targets, or when tanks are split apart and require simultaneous healing. However, these instances should be exceptions rather than the regular positioning strategy to maximize healing effectiveness in a typical encounter.

By understanding the impact of positioning on healing and damage output, Holy Paladins can strategically position themselves to optimize their Mastery: Lightbringer effect, effectively utilize Light of Dawn for AoE healing, and contribute damage through Crusader Strike. While there may be exceptions based on encounter dynamics, positioning oneself among melee DPS players offers the best opportunity to maximize healing and damage potential. With proper positioning, Holy Paladins can excel in their role and make a significant impact on the success of their group or raid.

Standard Melee Rotation

The standard melee rotation focuses on casting Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock as much as possible to gain healing through Glimmer of Light Icon Glimmer of Light and to generate as much Holy Power as possible for Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn. Our goal is to cast these two abilities as much as possible.

Unlock the secrets of the standard melee rotation in World of Warcraft. Avenging Crusader Rotation

The main rotational changes for the Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader build come in the form of maximizing your healing during the Avenging Crusader window. This means you will be prioritizing Judgment Icon Judgment over any other ability. After that, you will follow a similar rotation of casting Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock on cooldown, Hammer of Wrath Icon Hammer of Wrath to increase your time in Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader and managing your Holy Power to ensure you aren't wasting any.

When Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader is not active, your rotation will change slightly. Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock will be much more important, and Judgment Icon Judgment should not be cast unless to proc Empyrean Legacy Icon Empyrean Legacy. Outside of this, your goal will be to generate and spend as much holy power as possible to proc Awakening Icon Awakening and get back into Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader.

5-Man Healing

5-man healing is very similar to raiding rotations, with the exception that you will be casting Word of Glory Icon Word of Glory much more frequently.

Casting Rotation

When playing a talent build focused on casting abilities, your rotation will not overly change except for the fact you will want to make use of your Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light procs more than you would with a melee playstyle. That being said, it is still more optimal to cast either Holy Light Icon Holy Light or Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light on your Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light target. The more holy power you are spending, the more healing you will be outputting. The main difference between a caster playstyle and a melee playstyle is simply how you generate Holy Power. Where a melee build may rely on Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike for its Holy Power generation, casters instead focus on both Holy Light and Flash of Light, once again prioritizing casting them on your beacon target to generate extra Holy Power thanks to Tower of Radiance Icon Tower of Radiance.

The general rotation will follow something along these lines:

DPS Rotation

Dealing damage as a Holy Paladin is fairly simple, and most of it will come when you are doing healing anyway. If you find yourself trying to maximize your overall damage output with no regard for your healing, you can follow this rotation:

Holy Power

The two main ways of generating Holy Power come from Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock and Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike. While you will want to use Holy Shock on cooldown, Crusader Strike is a bit different. You will want to use this ability as often as possible in your rotation if you have selected the talent Crusader's Might Icon Crusader's Might. If you have not, this ability will have less priority in the rotation, as it has a high Mana cost. Whenever using Crusader Strike, make sure to keep an eye on your Mana, as it can deplete a lot more quickly than our Mana pool did throughout previous expansions.

The other two ways to generate Holy Power is through the use of Hammer of Wrath Icon Hammer of Wrath and directly healing your Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light target with Holy Light Icon Holy Light or Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light. In general, you will want to avoid healing your beacon target as it can result in overhealing, but the option does exist if you are in desperate need of Holy Power. Hammer of Wrath should be used when you cannot Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock or Crusader Strike Icon Crusader Strike for optimal healing output.

Whether you use this Holy Power on Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn or Word of Glory Icon Word of Glory will depend on what kind of damage the group is taking. If you need single-target healing, you would use Word of Glory Icon Word of Glory. If you needed AoE healing, you would use Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn.

Using Infusions

Throughout Shadowlands and BfA, Holy Paladin did not really ever use their Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light procs and ignored them to continue their normal rotation. In Dragonflight, this has not changed much. When you get an infusion proc, you still have two options. You can use Holy Light Icon Holy Light on a target who is in need of healing. If you decide you cannot use Holy Light, you will want to use Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light on your beacon target (or someone who is at risk of dying) to generate Holy Power, assuming you have the Mana to do so. If either of the casts will impact your core rotation, you will want to ignore the Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light proc entirely and not consume it.

Holy Light Icon Holy Light scales extremely well with the conduit Resplendent Light Icon Resplendent Light, which makes it an incredibly strong ability. However, you do not want to cast Holy Light if you have Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock coming off cooldown before the cast will finish. If someone might die without receiving an immediate heal, casting Holy Light would also be a mistake.

Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light has turned into a very efficient ability when it is buffed from Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light. Because of this, we can use it on our Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light target for 1 Holy Power by casting it on a tank or simply using it on a target in danger of dying. In most cases, you will want to prioritize the extra Holy Power when possible.

What ability you use will be situational, and you will have to decide in the moment. Generally, you will want to prioritize casting Holy Light Icon Holy Light unless it will impact your rotation or result in overhealing. Otherwise, you will want to use Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light or delay your Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light cast until a better opportunity arises. In most cases, your Infusion of Light buff will expire before you have a chance to use it, as Holy Paladin has many abilities that are higher in priority than consuming the buff.

A Word on Light of the Martyr

Light of the Martyr Icon Light of the Martyr is an instant cast spell that heals your target and damages you for 50% of the healing amount. It cannot be cast on yourself and it does not trigger healing on your Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light target unless you are using the Maraad's Dying Breath Icon Maraad's Dying Breath legendary.

Due to the damage it causes to yourself and the fact it does not transfer healing to beacons, its net total healing is quite poor. But because of the large up-front heal to the target, it can be a potent life-saving tool. This is why we do not recommend using Light of the Martyr Icon Light of the Martyr outside of the specific situations mentioned above and absolutely never if there is a risk your low health or incoming mechanics may cause you to die from the additional damage the spell inflicts on you.

Cooldown Usage for Holy Paladins

As a Holy Paladin, you have several healing cooldowns. You should use them as we explain below:

  • Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath increases your healing done and Critical Strike chance by 30% for 20. It is very useful during periods of high sustained damage.
  • Lay on Hands Icon Lay on Hands should be used to save dying raid members, especially tanks.
  • Blessing of Sacrifice Icon Blessing of Sacrifice lasts 12 seconds, transferring 30% of the damage taken by your target to you. The effect is automatically canceled if the transferred damage would cause you to fall below 20% health. This cooldown is excellent for reducing the damage taken by the tank or other raid members. Be cautious, however, because Blessing of Sacrifice can be dangerous to your own life if used without a damage reduction cooldown, such as Divine Protection Icon Divine Protection or Divine Shield Icon Divine Shield, or when simultaneous raid damage independently threatens your life such that the additional damage taken from Blessing of Sacrifice can lead to your death.
  • Aura Mastery Icon Aura Mastery empowers your chosen aura, increasing its range to 40 yards and also improving its efficiency. It is a raid cooldown, and it should be used at a time designated by your healing officer or raid leader.

Best Items to Upgrade in Dragonflight Season 2

When deciding what to upgrade, you will want to start with the weapon, followed by trinkets, and then any leech pieces you have, as well as your shield. Your theoretical order would look something like this:

Best Way to Spend Sparks of Shadowflame as Holy Paladin

While you can craft any gear with sparks, you will often gain the most power from crafting a one-handed weapon first. With your next spark, you will have to decide between Allied Wristguard of Companionship Icon Allied Wristguard of Companionship and Undulating Sporecloak Icon Undulating Sporecloak. While the wrists provide slightly higher HPS, the sporecloak provides an insanely large shield that can save your life during difficult content. For this reason, we advise making sporeclaok. If you are only focused on DPS and Mythic+, you could opt to craft with Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch Icon Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch.

Trinkets for Holy Paladins

When considering trinkets for Holy Paladins, it's important to take into account the item levels of the options available. While the best trinket choices may vary based on specific item levels, the following list provides an overview of some of the top trinkets for Holy Paladins. Aim to acquire at least two of these trinkets for optimal performance.

S Tier:

  2. Spoils of Neltharus (Neltharus)

  4. Idol of the Dreamer (Jewelcrafting)
  5. Idol of the Earth-Warder (Jewelcrafting)
  6. Idol of the Life-Binder (Jewelcrafting)
  7. Idol of the Spell-Weaver (Jewelcrafting)

B Tier:

  1. Sustaining Alchemist Stone (Alchemy)
  2. Alacritous Alchemist Stone (Alchemy)
  3. Whispering Incarnate (Vault of the Incarnates)
  4. Broodkeeper's Promise (Vault of the Incarnates)
  5. Erupting Spear Fragment (Neltharus)

Keep in mind that the ranking of trinkets can be subjective and may vary based on specific gear setups and encounter requirements. It's important to consider the individual benefits and effects of each trinket and how they align with your playstyle and the demands of the content you are engaging in. Experimenting with different trinket combinations and adapting them to suit different encounters can help you find the optimal setup for your Holy Paladin.
