Dragonflight Vengeance Demon Hunter Tanking Guide

Vengeance Demon Hunter Overview

The Vengeance Demon Hunter specialty is a dual-wielding, leather-clad tank with a mix of self-healing, damage mitigation, fast mobility, and enemy management. Unlike Protection Warriors, we are not entirely focused on preventing damage, but our toolset does enable us to significantly lessen damage. We are also one of only two classes, along with Blood Death Knights, that have the ability to heal based on damage taken.

Due to the fact that they are a hero class, new Demon Hunters must be either Blood Elves for the Horde or Night Elves for the Alliance, and their starting level is 8 instead of 1. A nice spec for gamers that want self-sustaining, high mobility tanks is the vengeance demon hunter.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Stats

For secondary stats, the Vengeance Demon Hunter has the following:

  • Agility > Haste >= Versatility > Critical Strike = Mastery
  • Critical Strike: This increases your chance to crit, doubling both damage and healing when that occurs. Critical strike rating is also converted to parry rating, increasing your chance to avoid melee hits. There is a hard cap at 100%, but it is currently not achievable.
  • Haste: This stat increases the proc rate of nearly everything in the game, aside from traits and trinkets that provide stats on proc. It also reduces the cooldown of Immolation Aura as well as the recharge rate of Fracture and Demon Spikes, and reduces the global cooldown by up to a maximum of 100%, from 1.5 seconds down to 0.75 seconds. However, it continues to reduce other cooldowns beyond that as well as increasing proc rates with no limit, so it does not get worse at any point.
  • Versatility: This stat provides a general increase to damage and healing done, as well as reducing damage taken at half the rate. It works against all forms of damage, so it is the most effective general purpose stat for damage reduction.
  • Mastery: This stat increases your attack power, as well as the amount of agility converted to armor during  Demon Spikes. Since half of the value applies at all times, and half is applied during  Demon Spikes, it is a fairly mediocre stat at this time, with  Demon Spikes having such a low uptime, unless running  Feed the Demon, in which case it gains some value, but still not enough to outweigh the value of other stats.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Phials

 Phial of Glacial Fury is generally the best option for Vengeance as it provides the most damage. If you want,  Phial of the Eye in the Storm can be a strong choice if you're fighting multiple enemies and provides some defensiveness as well. For raids, if you want a somewhat defensive option, you can take  Phial of Static Empowerment if you don't need to move often. As a last resort, use  Phial of Elemental Chaos.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Potions

There's really only one potion that's useful in any content, but a cheaper option has also been provided:

Vengeance Demon Hunter Weapon Buffs

You will generally want to use  Howling Rune on both weapons. If you want higher damage, you can sim  Buzzing Rune or  Primal Whetstone.
