Dragonflight Restoration Shaman Healing Guide

Restoration Shaman Overview

Restoration Shaman use Mana as their main resource and rely on the healing powers of water and their recognizable totems to keep their group members alive. With   Far Sight, we can see a great distance away, and  Astral Recall gives us a personal Hearthstone.

We have a broad variety of spells and gadgets at our disposal, and the majority of them work best when the group stacks closely. Both our single target heals and our supplementary Healing over Time spells are good. Together with this, there are powerful cooldowns that can easily get you out of perilous circumstances, a good deal of usefulness, and the capacity to replenish our own and our allies' mana.

We are unable to cast spells while transformed, yet we can quickly travel a great distance as a   Ghost Wolf.

Restoration Shaman Stats

Resto Shamans wear mail gear and place priority on Intellect. Intellect increases your Spell Power, which increases the healing and damage done by your spells.

For secondary stats, Resto Shamans have the following:

  • Intellect > Critical Strike > Versatility = Mastery > Haste
  • Critical Strike: Chance equal to your Critical Strike percentage for double effectiveness on attacks and heals, triggers  Resurgence on direct heals.
  • Haste: This stat works in two ways:
    • Casts: Lowers the cast time of your abilities and lowers the Global Cooldown incurred by your spells. Good to get more healing out in a specific timeframe. Totems have a static Global Cooldown and are excluded.
    • HoTs: Increases the healing done by the last tick of HoT spells and effects like  Riptide and  Healing Rain as well as periodic healing totems like  Healing Stream Totem and  Healing Tide Totem, increasing their mana effectiveness. If said tick grows as big as a real tick, a new tick is added. This removes the idea of breakpoints, as every single point of Haste effectively increases the throughput of HoT effects. Again, HoTs do not have haste breakpoints.
  • Mastery: Increases the effectiveness of  Mastery: Deep Healing.
    •  Mastery: Deep Healing increases the healing done by your spells the lower health your target is, and that effect is linear. Healing somebody at 25% of his maximum health will increase your healing by 75% of your mastery percentage.
    • This stat is very volatile and can rapidly change effectiveness fight to fight, even pull to pull. For mastery to shine. you need people at low health points for long periods of time, and even then it often doesn't quite beat the other stats.
  • Versatility: A passive damage and healing increase, while also reducing damage taken.

Restoration Shaman Phials

Overall the best phial for Restoration Shamans is  Phial of Elemental Chaos. A good alternative is  Iced Phial of Corrupting Rage as crit is very good, but it does come with the toxic side effect which means you do have to play more carefully with it.

For Mythic+ you want to go for  Phial of Glacial Fury for the extra damage output.

Restoration Shaman Combat Potions

There are a couple different potions that have different useful scenarios for Restoration Shamans:

Restoration Shaman Weapon Buff

Howling Rune is the only real useful weapon buff you'll want. Be aware that you cannot combine  Earthliving Weapon and weapon buffs, so whenever you are talented into  Earthliving Weapon, you don't want to use any  Howling Rune.

Restoration Shaman Rotation Priority

Restoration Shaman Healing Priority

This whole spell priority assumes there actually is healing to do, if there's nothing happening it is a lot better to spend your time pressing damage spells instead and resume with the healing priority once there is incoming damage, or about to be incoming damage.

  1. Keep  Riptides cooldown rolling to maintain stacks of  Undercurrent
  2. Try to be aware of party or raid members falling low on health, and depending on how urgently they need healing you can catch them with an instant ( Riptide,  Unleash Life), a quick and expensive  Healing Surge or a  Healing Wave. Try to avoid  Healing Surge as much as possible however as it will eat through your mana pool very quickly.
  3. You can prepare for incoming raid damage during downtime by using spells that last a while, so you have less to press once the damage hits. Example spells that are suited well for preparation are  Riptide (for  Primordial Wave),  Healing Stream Totem,  Unleash Life,  Earthen Wall Totem and  Healing Rain. This should be a few seconds early at best (excluding  Riptide) and you want to use the shortest duration spells last.
  4. Use  Cloudburst Totem for healing intensive moments to multiply your healing.
  5. Use your small cooldowns as frequently as possible to reduce how many fillers you have to cast. Under this category falls anything that's a minute or less, as these provide extremely efficient healing.
  6.  Ancestral Guidance is extremely flexible and can be used at any time to help if damage feels tough to heal. This spell is not on the global cooldown, which means you can activate it immediately after a cast, and start the next cast without interruption.
  7. Use your filler spells whenever you're out of cooldowns to use. During raid-wide damage that is usually  Chain Heal and  Healing Wave is your main single target filler spell. If you need to be conscious about mana you should put a higher priority on  Healing Wave.
  8. Use  Spirit Link Totem and  Healing Tide Totem against very large incoming raid-wide damage, ideally in coordination with your other healers.  Ancestral Guidance in combination with  Ascendance is strong enough to also fall into this category, as it is very potent throughput.
  9. Nothing to heal? Fall back into the damage rotation and occasionally use your small healing cooldowns in between. They don't need to be all kept on cooldown in this situation however.
