Here’s the first thing to remember: item level doesn’t matter. Take the Expert Goldminer's Helmet, for example—one of the best headpieces for a DPS Warrior, and it only requires level 33! Similarly, item quality is often irrelevant. For instance, the best pre-raid shoulders for Mages and Warlocks are green—not because nothing better exists, but because their stats align perfectly with the class and role.
Armor restrictions? They’re looser than you’d think:
- All classes can wear Cloth gear, so don’t hesitate to use it if it fits your needs.
- Six classes (Druid, Rogue, Hunter, Shaman, Paladin, and Warrior) can wear Leather.
- Four classes (Hunter, Shaman, Paladin, and Warrior) can equip Mail—though Hunters and Shamans only start wearing it at level 40.
- Two classes (Paladin and Warrior) can equip Plate, also beginning at level 40.
