• They disappear after 60 seconds, if you do spend them or do not gain new ones.

 Phial of Elemental Chaos should be used as your Phial of choice. In theory,  Phial of Static Empowerment is best, and  Iced Phial of Corrupting Rage is competitive with it, but in practice, they seem to have enough downtime that Elemental Chaos will pull ahead.

 Phial of Tepid Versatility is a decent option as well, especially for higher-level Mythic+ keys, as the static Versatility is a massive boon from a defensive standpoint.

 Buzzing Rune is usually the better of the temporary runes. However, the difference between them is tiny.

Healthstones heal for 25% of the user's maximum health.  Refreshing Healing Potion does not share a cooldown with Healthstones and should also be used when extra healing is required.

 Potion of Withering Vitality heals for about twice as much health as a  Refreshing Healing Potion and shares the same cooldown. However, you will suffer the same amount healed as damage over time.  Alter Time just after hitting, it can be a great way to negate much of the damage that it applies to you.

 Grand Banquet of the Kalu'ak (or any 76 Intellect buff) is the best food option, followed by  Sizzling Seafood Medley, and then  Salt-Baked Fishcake. The difference is about 1% between them, but the Intellect food is best once you start pushing out of the initial levelling gear.

In addition, if you can afford it, you should use  Draconic Augment Runes to increase your primary stat. Since there is a finite amount of the consumable runes available, you should make sure to use them wisely and to stock up on them for when you need them.

Primordial Stones

Our best single target gems are  Freezing Ice Stone,  Desirous Blood Stone, and  Prophetic Twilight Stone.

The best AoE setup is technically  Storm Infused Stone,  Pestilent Plague Stone, and  Obscure Pastel Stone if you can remain within the melee range of your targets. However, given the single target DPS loss, this is likely a sub-optimal setup for most real-world cases. For a very minor single target loss, you can instead run Storm Infused Stone,  Desirous Blood Stone, and  Prophetic Twilight Stone. This is actually the second-highest AoE setup and second-highest single target. This is around a 0.3% loss on both single target and AoE, where the technical best AoE set is around a 2.3% loss for a single target.

You can actually make multiple rings by buying an extra from the vendor and set up multiple maxed-out rings as you see fit. If you are into optimizing yourself that far, it is certainly an option.

   However, it's important not to let valuable procs, like Brain Freeze or 2 stacks of Fingers of Frost, go to waste. Munching the proc by not utilizing them properly can result in a significant loss of damage. Therefore, prioritize casting the corresponding powerful spells associated with the procs when they are available.

2. Leveraging Blink: Blink is a powerful mobility tool that allows you to quickly cover a distance of 20 yards or more. In most cases, casting Blink incurs less downtime than manually running the same distance. Ensure that you make effective use of Blink, as it significantly reduces movement-related downtime.

   If you have chosen the Shimmer talent, you have access to even greater mobility. With no Global Cooldown penalty, you can cast Shimmer while simultaneously casting other spells. This allows you to maintain uninterrupted casting while repositioning during movement phases.

3. Harnessing the Power of Ice Floes: Ice Floes talent provides remarkable versatility and mobility. With some practice and a comfortable keybind, Ice Floes can significantly reduce downtime caused by movement. You can cast Ice Floes while already casting a spell, allowing you to continue casting while moving. It's important to note that Ice Floes does not consume a charge if activated in the last 500 milliseconds (half a second) of a cast. This allows you to cast a spell and utilize a charge for an additional cast before the charge is consumed.

   Mastering the timing of Ice Floes activation can lead to impressive spell utilization. For example, you can start casting Frostbolt, activate Ice Floes near the end of the cast, start another Frostbolt with the charge while moving, and activate a second Ice Floes at the end of that Frostbolt. Both charges will remain unconsumed, resulting in three spells cast with just two charges. This technique requires practice, but it is a strategy employed by top-tier Frost Mages to minimize downtime due to movement.

Remember that in addition to Ice Floes, you still have the reliable Blink at your disposal for covering larger movement requirements swiftly.

2. Shatter Timing with Flurry: A common misconception is that only spells cast after Flurry will benefit from Shatter. However, Frost Mages have a unique mechanic in that Flurry's travel speed is faster than the cast time spells like Frostbolt, Glacial Spike, and Ebonbolt. This means that you can actually Shatter the spell cast before Flurry.

   As a result, if you cast a spell such as Frostbolt or Ebonbolt just before Flurry, Flurry's faster flight speed allows it to impact first and apply Winter's Chill to the target. This consumption of Winter's Chill debuff applies to one of the first two bolt spells, rather than the last one. The cast time spell you cast previously will then impact the target and gain the benefit of Shatter, resulting in increased damage.

3. Impact on Glacial Spike: Utilizing this interaction is particularly important when using Glacial Spike. By casting Frostbolt or Ebonbolt before Flurry, you ensure that Flurry applies Winter's Chill and consumes the debuff on one of the first two bolt spells. This allows Glacial Spike to critically strike, triggering a chain reaction where all the included Mastery: Icicles will also critically strike. This significantly amplifies the damage output of Glacial Spike, making it a potent burst tool.

   Even when not using Glacial Spike, it is recommended to always precede every Flurry with either Frostbolt or Ebonbolt to fully optimize the benefits of Winter's Chill and Shatter.

The Basics

At its most basic, the premise of Frost Mage is to spam  Frostbolt until you gain a proc.  Fingers of Frost allows you to cast  Ice Lance and gain the benefits of the frozen state.  Brain Freeze resets the cooldown of  Flurry and Flurry wants you to use a cast time spell, like Frostbolt, going into the Flurry, and then follow up with 2 Ice Lances to consume the 2 remaining  Winter's Chill charges.

This  Frostbolt >  Flurry >  Ice Lance >  Ice Lance combo is the heart of the spec, and if you have that committed to memory, then the rest is simple. Anything beyond it is simply cooldown and movement management. The priority lists below will showcase where exactly they are to be used optimally, but as long as they are being used at all, your damage should not suffer too severely.

The Rotation

1. Cast  Time Warp if Time Warp or a similar spell is not currently active.
2. Cast  Icy Veins.
3. Cast  Rune of Power, after the one from  Icy Veins fades.
4. Cast  Flurry have just cast  Frostbolt, or another spell that will benefit from  Winter's Chill.
5. Cast  Blizzard if there are 7 or more targets that will get hit by it.
6. Cast  Frozen Orb.
7. Cast  Ice Lance whenever there are charges of  Winter's Chill on the target that is not otherwise prioritized.
8. Cast  Ice Lance if you have  Fingers of Frost.
9.  Shifting Power if  Rune of Power is not active, and the manual charge is on cooldown.
10. Cast  Frostbolt.

Using the pure single target build with  Frozen Touch and  Deep Shatter, there is a variant of the rotation that casts fewer  Ice Lances than usual. For the most part, this can be simplified into "Shatter as many Icicles as possible." This is achieved by ignoring  Fingers of Frost, and only casting one Ice Lance into Winter's Chill, rather than two.

This gets a little bit more complicated as it depends on  Brain Freeze procs. If you proc  Brain Freeze on the initial  Frostbolt, you continue to cast two  Ice Lances into the Winter's Chill. If you do not proc it, you cast one into a Frostbolt to consume the second stack. After that, you carry on as usual. Remember that the second charge Frostbolt does not mean you can follow that Frostbolt with  Flurry. You do not want to munch Winter's Chill charges, so you want to cast another Frostbolt before the next Flurry.

A note on  Shifting Power in this specific variant is that you only cast it when both  Rune of Power and  Icy Veins are down or if  Icy Veins has less than 20 seconds left on its cooldown. This is unlike the normal rotation, where you are simply looking for Rune of Power not to be active. Rune of Power should also be held if Icy Veins is within 20 seconds of coming off of cooldown for use after the automatic one expires rather than right away.

All in all, this is about a 1.7% gain, fully geared.

The AoE priority system should kick in when you are fighting 3 or more mobs, dropping to the above rotations once you fall below.

For the most part, if you have  Ice Caller talented, your AoE consists of  Frozen Orb and  Blizzard to lower the cooldown. That is the primary driver. Everything else is just cooldown management, such as  Ice Nova,  Shifting Power, and  Rune of Power.

If you do not have  Ice Caller talented, do not AoE until 7 targets. Also, consider speccing Ice Caller next time you do that fight.

Shimmer allows you to move without interrupting your spellcasting, providing seamless mobility. Use Shimmer as a pseudo Ice Floes, taking advantage of its instant-cast nature to cover short to moderate distances during movement phases.

   Leverage the instant-cast nature of Frost Mage spells to your advantage. Save charges of Fingers of Frost for predictable movement moments, using these global cooldowns to cover the entire distance while still maintaining a consistent damage output.

3. Positioning and Fight Movement: Strategic positioning is essential for efficient movement. Always strive to position yourself in a central location that minimizes the distance you need to cover during fight movement. For example, if the boss is moving in a circular pattern, position yourself on the inside of the kite path to minimize your own movement requirements.

4. Alter Time: Alter Time can be a valuable tool for movement. Timing the casting of Alter Time just after moving out of the raid to deal with a mechanic allows for an instantaneous return to your previous position. Consider using Alter Time as a movement ability rather than for healing, unless the healers are overwhelmed and your survival depends on it.

By mastering movement management techniques, utilizing mobility-enhancing spells, and positioning yourself strategically, you can ensure minimal downtime and optimal damage output as a Frost Mage. Use  Fingers of Frost and  Brain Freeze as they come: Fingers of Frost, through straight  Ice Lance casts, and Brain Freeze, through the primary  Frostbolt >  Flurry > Ice Lance > Ice Lance combo. Now, there are situations in which you have mentally committed yourself to going into your Frostbolt > Flurry > Ice Lance > Ice Lance, but you proc Fingers of Frost on that Frostbolt. That is unfortunate, but the Flurry is worth more overall. There is a small upside in most builds, though.  Wintertide increases the damage of the Ice Lance cast into a "double frozen" scenario like this by 20%. While it is not optimal, it lessens the impact.

There is never a situation in which you will fire two  Flurrys back to back. Likewise, there is never a situation in which you go  Frostbolt > Flurry >  Ice Lance > Flurry > Ice Lance. You always have a cast time spell — Frostbolt,  Ebonbolt, or  Glacial Spike — preceding Flurry, regardless of talent setup.

Mastering Cleave as a Frost Mage

To maximize your damage potential as a Frost Mage, it's crucial to effectively capitalize on cleave opportunities. Cleave refers to the ability to deal damage to multiple targets simultaneously, making it an essential aspect of group encounters. Here are key strategies for maximizing cleave as a Frost Mage:

1. Thoughtful Spell Usage: To optimize cleave damage, it's important to carefully consider how you use your spells. Avoid haphazard or random casting, as it can result in a loss of damage potential. Instead, think strategically about the situation and select spells that make the most sense for the encounter. Be mindful of cooldowns and timers, such as when your Frozen Orb is about to come off cooldown.

2. Planning for Cleave Opportunities: Take advantage of boss timers and encounter mechanics to identify optimal moments for cleave damage. Consider the positioning of adds or the boss and plan your spell usage accordingly. For example, if a boss is about to enter a phase with increased damage dealt or widespread AoE, align your abilities such as Frozen Orb or Blizzard to maximize their impact.

3. Synergies and Overlaps: Explore the various synergies and overlaps between your spells to amplify cleave damage. Experiment with combinations of spells such as Frostbolt, Ice Lance, and your AoE abilities to create a chain of damage across multiple targets. Look for opportunities to apply debuffs or crowd control effects that facilitate efficient cleave damage.

4. Communication and Coordination: Effective communication with your team is crucial for coordinated cleave damage. Coordinate with your tank, other DPS, and healers to ensure that cleave opportunities are maximized. 5. Awareness and Adaptation: Stay aware of the dynamic nature of encounters and be prepared to adapt your cleave strategy accordingly. Adjust your spell usage based on the movement of targets, changes in encounter mechanics, or shifting priorities. Continuously assess the situation and make real-time decisions to optimize your cleave damage.

By thoughtfully considering spell usage, planning for cleave opportunities, leveraging synergies, and adapting to the encounter, you can maximize your damage output as a Frost Mage. Utilize common sense and strategic thinking to make the most of your spells and contribute significantly to the success of your group in encounters that call for cleave damage.

We advise you to use the following opening sequence (or opener).

1. Pre-cast  Frostbolt at 2 seconds on the countdown.
2. Cast  Flurry to start the cooldown and to  Shatter the prior  Frostbolt.
3.  Frostbolt should land, and the boss encounter should have begun at this point.
4. Activate  Icy Veins.
5. Cast  Frozen Orb.
6. Follow your normal priority.

 Rune of Power is incredibly strong. On-demand 40% damage boost for 12 seconds, which can be dropped every 45 seconds and will additionally, automatically drop when you cast  Icy Veins is very hard to match. This talent will also allow you to take advantage of vulnerability phases better, something Frost has traditionally struggled with.

It is never advisable to try and game  Incanter's Flow. You lose too many potential procs throughout a fight, and it only takes one or two losses to make the whole endeavor a waste.

As per usual, a best-in-slot list is a bit of a meaningless endeavor on Frost. In almost all cases, item level upgrade is worth taking unless you replace a piece of jewelry with a huge amount of Mastery with a piece that does not. A simulation will be needed to check those. In many cases, it will be worth doing just because the overall total of stats on the higher item level piece makes up the loss in "optimal" stats.

 Idol of Pure Decay is a strong trinket and very likely your best trinket available in most cases, although it is less than 1% behind other key trinket combos.

Your second trinket changes marginally based on target count. It can be  Screaming Black Dragonscale,  Vessel of Searing Shadow, or  Igneous Flowstone. Sim, what trinkets you have available, to be absolutely sure. In most cases, they are close enough that it will not matter as long as their item level is the same. Higher item level is very likely going to win out on raw stats due to how similar value trinkets are this season.

 Voice of the Silent Star is another rare item, but is also best in slot even at Heroic item level.

 Neltharion's Call to Chaos is bad for raid. The primary issue is that it only procs on AoE spells. At 1 rppm, on a single target, if it does not proc on your  Frozen Orb, you just get no benefit from it until Orb comes back off cooldown. In M+, it is great, as you have Frozen Orb and  Blizzard out almost constantly.

Determining the best-in-slot gear for a Frost Mage can be a complex task that heavily depends on your progression level, gear availability, and individual stat weights. It is essential to understand that a generic "best in slot" list may not be applicable to your specific character and current gear setup.

To accurately determine the optimal gear for your Frost Mage, it is recommended to utilize tools like SimulationCraft or Raidbots. By running simulations, you can identify the gear pieces that provide the highest DPS output for your particular character.

1. Simulate your character: Set up a simulation profile for your Frost Mage, including your current gear, talents, and relevant options. Run multiple simulations to gather a range of results and ensure accuracy.

2. Establish accurate stat weights: Stat weights play a significant role in determining gear optimization. Use the simulation results to establish accurate stat weights for your character, considering the impact of different stats on your DPS.
