Dragonflight Fire Mage DPS Guide

Fire Mage Overview

Fire Mage may be the specialty for you if you've ever wondered why the adage "fight fire with fire" rather than "fight everything with fire" is used. Fire has long been one of the deadliest schools of magic in World of Warcraft, from the fire we stand in during raids to the Pyroblasts of the Defias PillagersThe  Mastery: Ignite cleave and offensive focus of Fire Mage have long been recognized as its strengths. If you're seeking for a specialization that enables you to transform your adversaries into walking bonfires that spread their flame to further adversaries nearby, look no further.

One of the few ranged caster specialties in World of Warcraft that emphasizes cleave rather than spread damage over time is Fire Mage, a damage-dealing caster that wears Cloth armor. It is a playstyle that emphasizes burst play because the majority of your damage occurs during  Combustion.  The playstyle is centered around a steady flow of critical hits that generate  Heating Up then  Hot Streak! while  Mastery: Ignite burns your enemy for additional fire damage.  Phoenix Flames be utilized to spread your fire to adjacent enemies once you have fanned the flames for a sufficient amount of time.

Fire Mage Stats

Intellect is your primary stat, found on cloth gear. Intellect increases your spell power and damage done on abilities.

For secondary stats, the Fire Mage has the following:

  • Intellect > Haste > Mastery >= Versatility > Critical Strike
  • Critical Strike: Chance for extra effectiveness on attacks and heals.
  • Haste: Increases attack speed and spell casting speed.
  • Mastery: Increases the effectiveness of  Mastery: Ignite.
  • Versatility: Increases damage and healing, and reduces damage taken.

Fire Mage Phials

Overall the best phial for Fire Mages is  Phial of Elemental Chaos. This is because we want to strafe or jump during  Combustion to avoid hard-casting  Pyroblast accidently. This makes  Phial of Static Empowerment far less useful. For Mythic+,  Phial of Glacial Fury is recommended.

Fire Mage Combat Potions

For all content, Fire Mage wants to use  Elemental Potion of Ultimate Power primary stat potions.  Elemental Potion of Power are a cheaper alternative.

Fire Mage Weapon Buff

For their weapons, Fire Mages want to use  Howling Rune, or lower quality versions to save gold.

Best Fire Mage Food

Best Fire Mage Gems

It is always best to use sims to decide which gems to use, but generally you want a  Fierce Illimited Diamond and  Keen Ysemeralds.

Fire Mage Rotation and Priority

Fire Mage Opener

  1. Four seconds before pull: hardcast a  Pyroblast. This will always crit due to  Firestarter.
  2. Cast  Fire Blast as soon as your pre-cast  Pyroblast hits. During  Firestarter (above 90%),  Fireball and  Pyroblast always crit, so you will always have either  Heating Up or  Hot Streak!
  3. Cast  Pyroblast (with  Hot Streak!)
  4.  Fireball should be cast as a filler to generate  Hot Streak!. Cast  Pyroblast (with  Hot Streak!).
  5. Cast  Pyroblast then  Fire Blast if  Fire Blast charges are about to cap and maintain the  Feel the Burn buff from  Fire Blast. Try to refresh the buff as late as possible without dropping stacks.
  6. Alternate between  Fireball,  Pyroblast and  Fire Blast,  Pyroblast until  Sun King's Blessing is ready.
  • With  Sun King's Blessing ready, Hardcast  Pyroblast to activate  Sun King's Blessing
  • Cast  Combustion and  Fire Blast before the  Pyroblast hardcast finishes to generate  Hot Streak!
  • Cast  Pyroblast (with  Hot Streak!)
  • Cast  Phoenix Flames then  Pyroblast if  Fire Blast isn't available or  Feel the Burn buff has more than 3 seconds left
  • Cast  Fire Blast then  Pyroblast if  Fire Blast is available and  Feel the Burn buff has less than 3 seconds left
  • If  Fire Blast and  Phoenix Flames charges are spent, cast  Scorch then  Pyroblast
  • When  Rune of Power fades, cast it to maintain the buff. If  Sun King's Blessing is ready and  Rune of Power has less than 2 seconds left, cast  Rune of Power early.
  • If  Sun King's Blessing is ready and  Rune of Power will persist until the hardcast finishes, delay  Rune of Power until after the  Sun King's Blessing hardcast
  • Once  Sun King's Blessing is ready again (after 8  Hot Streak!s) during  Combustion, Hardcast  Pyroblast to activate it. This will extend  Combustion.
  • Use  Shifting Power when  Rune of Power is on cooldown and you have no  Fire Blast charges
  • Continue to alternate between  Pyroblast (with  Hot Streak!) and  Fire Blast/ Phoenix Flames/ Scorch while maintaining  Feel the Burn.
  • If  Combustion has less than a second left and you do not have  Hot Streak! or time to finish a cast, use  Ice Nova for a little extra damage with guaranteed crit
  • After  Combustion fades continue to main rotation
  • Fire Mage Single Target Rotation and Priority

    1. During  Firestarter (above 90%),  Fireball and  Pyroblast always crit, so you will always have either  Heating Up or  Hot Streak!
    2. Use  Fire Blast to gain  Hot Streak!, then cast  Pyroblast.
    3. Once  Sun King's Blessing is ready, hard-cast  Pyroblast and cast  Combustion right as the hard-cast is ending. Save two or more  Fire Blast and  Phoenix Flames to use with it. Ideally you have  Sun King's Blessing ready going into  Combustion.
    4. Cast  Rune of Power ahead of  Sun King's Blessing hardcast  Pyroblast when  Sun King's Blessing is ready and  Combustion is on cooldown
    5. Cast  Pyroblast hard-cast with  Sun King's Blessing ready
    6. Cast  Pyroblast (with  Hot Streak!)
    7. Cast  Fire Blast (with  Heating Up) to generate  Hot Streak!
    8. Cast  Pyroblast hard-cast with  Pyroclasm. Do this during  Combustion once  Fire Blast charges are low
    9. Cast  Shifting Power if  Combustion,  Rune of Power, and all charges of  Fire Blast are on cooldown
    10. Cast  Phoenix Flames to generate  Heating Up if you are about to cap at three charges

Fire Mage Multi Target Rotation and Priority

    1. Four seconds before pull: hard-cast a  Flamestrike
    2. Cast  Combustion and  Fire Blast over .5 seconds before the  Flamestrike cast ends
    3. Cast a second  Fire Blast before the  Flamestrike cast ends, queued into a  Hot Streak!  Flamestrike
    4. Cast  Phoenix Flames and  Fire Blast to generate  Hot Streak!
    5. Cast  Ice Nova
    6. Cast  Shifting Power when out of  Fire Blast
    7. Use  Fire Blast twice while channeling  Shifting Power
    8. If there is still time left on  Combustion then cast  Scorch twice to generate  Hot Streak! and  Flamestrike
    9. Cast  Arcane Explosion with mana if targets will not survive the  Flame Patch duration, or if  Flame Patch is not talented at 5 or more targets.
    10. After  Combustion fades continue to main rotation
    11. Cast  Rune of Power on cooldown
    12. Cast  Scorch to generate  Heating Up is a target is below 30%
    13. Hardcast  Flamestrike with  Flame Patch at 3 or more targets where applicable (see additional rules above)
    14. Cast  Fireball to generate  Heating Up
    15. When  Sun King's Blessing is ready, cast  Rune of Power ahead of hardcast  Flamestrike
